You're right, it's dangerous, but much of what they do is a reaction against the crap humans throw their way. They wouldn't feel the need to do that without pressure from the Chantry and its Templars, though. It doesn't make it right, but it's not done for no reason. With any luck, that practice will see an end now that times have changed.
