It had been to keep Luke safe while his mother had been raised on Alderaan by a friend of his grandmother's. While he was generally disrespectful when speaking of his uncle, he actually shows a slight bit of respect to his grandparents. After all, without them he would not exist. Without Darth Vader's greatness, he wouldn't have the aspirations he does.
