To his credit (eh), Bartimaeus drops the act instantaneously. "More than you've got going for you, I can almost certainly guarantee."

Look, it's not hubris - it's just facts. What's a run of the mill whoever he is supposed to do in the face of an all powerful, all knowing2 spirit of his talent and range? Honestly, there just can't possibly be much on the table. There's a reason even magicians need defensive matrixes and offense spells like the Punative Jab and, ol' reliable herself, The Systemic Vice. Spirits such as himself are no joke to the untrained and unassuming. If it weren't for the whole part where they were shackled to the physical world against their will, it might almost be unfair.

Good thing the whole 'slavery' thing really negates any regret, huh?

"Honestly, we'd both be much better off if you just got over it. All this delaying the inevitable is only keeping us here for longer, and I don't know about you but the smell isn't my favorite."
