Test Drive!

TEST DRIVE MEME

While in some alternate, tidier timeline, the War against the Elder One ended years ago, you're not in that timeline. It's 9:49, and the war continues. An enemy force partially occupies Orlais and has decimated several Marcher Cities, while the Chantry, aided by the Inquisition, has marshaled Orlais and the faithful of Southern Thedas into a new Exalted March against the army of demon-bound Wardens, Red Templars, Venatori loyalists, and darkspawn Corypheus has amassed. Rifts are still scattered across the continent, periodically spitting out strangers from strange worlds with green-glowing anchors embedded in their hands. There's no Herald of Andraste to save Thedas. Someone else is going to have to do it.

You're part of (or allied with, recently hired by, imprisoned by, etc.) an organization, dubbed Riftwatch, that split off from the Inquisition several years ago. Riftwatch consists of these otherworldly new arrivals, rebels and Wardens, and other people who want to prevent the apocalypse without necessarily marching under the Chantry's banner to do it. Their headquarters is an island fortress called the Gallows—formerly a Circle of Magi, more formerly a prison for slaves, but its new occupants have done a good job removing the more grotesque reminders of that past and making the place livable. Their goal is to do what the Chantry can't or won't do, to go more directly after Corypheus and the dark magic he employs, and to keep the Veil from coming apart entirely.

Maybe you're here because you want to help. Maybe you need the money (though there isn't much of it). Maybe you acquired an anchor and sticking around is the only way to prevent your hand from killing you. Maybe you've been sent by the Chantry or some other entity to keep an eye on everyone—they're rumored to be a lot of weirdos and troublemakers. Or maybe you're a new rifter and just going where the nice people with swords tell you that you need to go.

NOTE: This is a static test drive! We post them once per year or so and continue to use them for a long time, so you're never late. Current players are encouraged to track new top-level comments.

I. THE FREE MARCHES: Hasmal, Tantervale, and most recently Starkhaven have all fallen to the Tevinter incursion, leaving Kirkwall the largest city-state in the Free Marches to remain unoccupied. For Riftwatch, that means the war is closer to home than ever, and traveling anywhere north of the mountains runs the risk of running into enemy scouting parties. Perhaps you've been sent out to find these scouts before they find the unwary, or perhaps you're just trying to pass through unnoticed to Antiva or Rivain when you run into trouble. Or maybe you're more in the thick of it: joining the Free Marches armies in harassing the occupying army as best they can from outside the city, or slipping your way into one of them to gather intelligence or meet with an ally.

II. THE WAKING SEA: When Riftwatch isn't traveling by griffon or magic mirror, it frequently travels by sea, courtesy of a small assortment of allied pirate ships. So welcome aboard. The sea is choppy and frequently violent—violent storms, violent enemy ships, or both at once—and the crew may not have much patience for incompetence, so either make yourself useful above or try not to get sick below.

III. KIRKWALL: Even when enormous evil darkspawn are trying to take over the known world and you and your colleagues might be the only ones who can truly stop him, you can't work all the time. And when you aren't working, Kirkwall is there for you with its dingy Lowtown taverns, its flashy Hightown establishments, its market stalls and street musicians and cellars hosting gamblers. (Or maybe you can work all the time, and you're in the city to do some official shopping, try to spy on a suspicious character, or show a potential financial backer a good time.)

IV. SEND A MESSAGE: Each member of Riftwatch is assigned a blue crystal, small enough to wear around the neck, that can transmit voice messages, as well as an enchanted book tied to that crystal that can be used to exchange written messages. They're secure enough to discuss the war, if you'd like to get down to business, but loosely controlled enough to ask a question or play a game with only a few rolled eyes from people who hate fun.

V. WILDCARD: From the Gallows' library to the pirate islands off the coast, from Hightown's high-priced market stalls to the bloody frontlines of the war, Thedas is yours to explore.

Bene does notice the mug, but says nothing-- it's nice to have a friend who's another mage, sometimes, even if he uses a different kind of magic.
The question he effortlessly deflects, having a much more pressing one of his own.

"I'm sorry, to the what?"

[Karlach exhales when she sees the anchor. She's never seen one before, though she's heard whispers of how the come to be. How people come through the rifts.]

Where were you? Before the hole in the sky?

"End. Of. Time." Loki enunciates just loudly enough to match Benedict in being heard over the din, leaning towards his companion. "Fairly desolate place before; more alive now, I suppose, but still. Empty."

Squinting at Benedict a little bit. "I'm not sure I've ever seen you drunk before."

As do we all, soldier.

[Karlach sighs deeply, her shoulders losing their tension to let her arms hang down. She straightens up again, waves her closer. They're burning daylight. They can talk while they continue their walk.]

I'm good at killing, if I have a good reason.

Turns out, [Karlach shakes the tension out of her shoulders again:] being ordered to sack a village falls on the side of "not good enough".
icasm: (tell me go back home)

His response begins with a mumbled: "I fell asleep." Loki has opted too bring the book with, clambering to his feet as Mobius turned and led them both away. "After falling out of a rift, again, for I suppose the entire trip returning to Kirkwall, and there was concern upon my arrival that I was unwell, or something, I suppose."

He ducks his head a little, expecting Mobius will read between the lines and find Loki's story both concerning and lacking in detailed explanation. "Quarantine upon quarantine. I came to the library looking for you, actually, but..."

He fell asleep. Again. As Mobius knows.
armd: (but you said :()

[personal profile] armd 2023-11-15 10:28 am (UTC)(link)
Taking half the stack of books from his arms is helping out but also an excuse to bump into him with her hands and confirm that, yes, he is actually still here. He did the same to her in the library so she doesn't bother to be more stealthy about it. Been a long time since they've been around each other and thinking the same things.

"What's 'sleep trouble'?" Can't be a fancy way of saying nightmares. Who cares how Abby is; what's been keeping Loki from walking around the Gallows unimpeded and finding her before now? Sounds far more pressing. "Are you okay?"
favoriteanalyst: (but the well is dry)

[personal profile] favoriteanalyst 2023-11-15 11:38 am (UTC)(link)
Mobius does, in fact, find it concerning and lacking. But if he looks a little more tired, Loki looks downright exhausted. "If some kind of sleeping sickness starts going around, we'll know who to blame, anyway."

It's the point of quarantine, to make sure nothing starts spreading around them and spreading to the city and- But they can't catch everything. "If Strange hasn't seen to you yet, you better swing by medical." He glances over his shoulder, wonders if maybe he shouldn't march him there right now. But instead, he waits a beat for Loki to catch up and then continues, side by side, to dining. He even places a hand on Loki's back, a gentle pressure between the shoulder blades like guiding him, not actively pushing, just keeping pace. "I don't know what happened to your place," he says, pivoting in subject matter. "Or, I guess it was your girlfriend's place."
icasm: (the place where you belong)

[personal profile] icasm 2023-11-15 05:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Loki smiles at the hand touching confirmation of existence and then immediately shakes his head in an attempt to dismiss the idea that he's not okay or that Abby needs to be actively worried about him.

"Mostly I am... just very tired but it comes out in unexpected times. It's difficult to wake me and I fall asleep in crowded or uncommon spaces. Things like that." Plus, yes, nightmares with a dash of sleepwalking for good measure.

Ya boi is exhausted, Abby, and has been for countless days. Now he's in a body that won't put up with untold years of sleep debt.

Loki tenses at the touch — can't help it, before arriving back in Thedas casual touch had been such a rather distant memory — but immediately relaxes further than he had been at any point since waking.

There's still a lot of tension along his spine that Mobius can feel. The sort that feels rather ingrained as opposed to immediately wary.

"It's not contagious, I promise. I wouldn't risk that here." The state of medicine, in Thedas? Not prepared for any sort of outbreak that Loki can imagine. "I'm just tired, is all."

A breath, more like a caught sigh than anything else. Alexandrie. Right. He needs to figure out getting in touch with her, sooner than later most likely. "It's alright. That's not... there was nothing for you to do with that.

How have you been, Mobius?"

[ Awkwardly, she's never sure how to answer questions like this. She was in Arizona before she came here, but grew up somewhere totally different. It's complicated, so she defaults to the simplest answer even if it's not what feels true to her. ]

Place called Phoenix. It's basically a city built on top of a desert.

"What does that even mean!" Benedict asks, his glassy eyes now alight with curiosity as he once more sidesteps Loki's question. "Is-- is time also a place? What?"

"You were dead asleep." Sure, there's 'just tired', but then there's also dead to the whole entire world tired, which is, by his measure, a different kind of tired than Loki normally shows.

It's a kindness, maybe, that Mobius doesn't start laughing at Loki's question. A wry pull at the corner of his mouth to betray him, but no laughter. How has he been? How has he been? Where would he even start?

The dining hall is almost never fully empty, but between meals, it's sparse. Hopefully there won't be any yelling, though. "I'm still kicking in spite of everything." He tucks into a nice corner spot. "I'm fine."

Though when compelled to tell the truth, Mobius showed he has an interesting relationship with the word fine as an assessment of himself.

"You gonna conk out here? Maybe I should've led you to bed."
armd: (sideways)

[personal profile] armd 2023-11-16 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm. Doesn't seem so 'okay' to her. God, caring for Loki's well-being is like second nature to Abby. She slips back into it like she would an old, warm coat.

"Why are you so tired though? Do you know?" She's looking at his face, his eyes, when he says it and then she notices, how truly exhausted he seems. Maybe questioning him like this in a corridor isn't the best plan.

She jerks her head, to indicate that they should walk. They can go find a place to sit.
icasm: (so I had to chamon look)

[personal profile] icasm 2023-11-16 07:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Loki narrows his eyes for a moment, weighing the pro-cons of just straight up lying before he lands at: "It's... probably going to be that way a while."

The exhaustion, he means. The weird deep sleep in strange places. "I will, eventually, tell you what's happened to me, I promise. I just... I need time, I guess." To figure out where the fuck to even start, for one.

Mobius sits; Loki joins him, more or less leaning in toward his friend, long legs out, arm bent on the table. "I haven't managed to fall asleep mid-conversation yet. Do I win a prize if I accomplish it?" Gentle amusement, but also: "What is fine, here? The war is still on, and you look tired. Mildly angry. Probably with me. Which is fair. But mostly tired. Should I stop talking?"
favoriteanalyst: (when this house don't feel like home)

[personal profile] favoriteanalyst 2023-11-16 07:40 pm (UTC)(link)
"No," a little too quickly, "no, don't stop talking. If you can't tell me...then, I don't know, tell me something you can tell me? Did you...feel anything when you left?"

There's the idea that Cosima knows very, very well from her own personal experiences, an idea that none of the Rifters here are exactly the people from their own realities. That the Loki from his home is still there in that reality, but the one here is more of an exact copy created by the Fade. Does that mean, then, that this Loki, this Loki that remembers, is technically a different person? (does thedas have the concept of the Ship of Theseus??)

"Or, if you can't even tell me that, that's fine. That's okay. It's been...it's been a while. You've probably figured that out." Which still breezily skip's past Loki's question of what 'fine' is to Mobius.

"I understand completely. Well, I'm sure we'll be happy to host you for however long your business keeps you here. As always, we've had personnel in and out, but there are certainly faces you'll know."

As they get underway, the ferryman keeping his reaction to himself, Julius adds, "It's been a strange time for trade, I can say even as an outsider. I'm in contact with a few merchants as part of my work, and it seems that things blow hot and cold, depending on where one is and where the front is." The shift from Orlais to the Marches had certainly affected Riftwatch's supply lines as it had everyone else's.

Once upon a time Loki would have been much too proud to take Abby's style of care with anything approaching grace. Things have changed. And he is, truly, incredibly exhausted.

"I do know why," he tells her, and they're off, only much more slowly than racehorses. Loki shoves his hands in his pockets in such a familiar way, combined with that slight slump in his shoulders, that might telegraph to her that he's not looking forward to the whole truth of the matter coming out... but also he's not planning on outright lying about it, either. "As per usual, it is primarily the consequences of my own actions."
icasm: (I just wanna feel somethin')

[personal profile] icasm 2023-11-19 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Loki frowns a little, thinking back, and then shakes his head. "No. I didn't... I didn't feel anything. I was here, with you, and then... everything else I remembered happening in my life elsewhere just picked back up. No pause, no recollection, nothing."

Truth be told Loki had already reached a similar conclusion as Cosima, the last time he was around; Thedas creates variants of people from other timelines and somehow drags them around through and via the Fade. But he only really half remembers the details of that train of thought all this time later. "I don't think... I'm the same me that remembers my life elsewhere. Does that make sense? I am the same me that was here... but this version of me is actually separate from the other, despite having memories of both. Maybe because of? I don't know." A pause. "Not sure it matters, not really. A fiction problem, not a science one."

He's going to give himself a headache if he keeps this up.

"At least a year," is his response to the rest of Mobius' comment on how long it's been. "There is something you are actively not telling me, and I'm not sure if I should push or leave it."
icasm: (we can play it safe)

[personal profile] icasm 2023-11-19 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
"Mm, no." Loki holds up a finger. "I am not telling you anything else about the End of Time until you tell me why you are here and drunk, midweek. You want my story, you start."

This stops Benedict fully in his tracks, such that they are: did Loki just scold him? Some of the wryness leaves his smile, and he glances about, unsure of how to proceed without losing face. (Did he have any to begin with? He likes to think so, and yet--)

He clears his throat with a little toss of his hair. "Can't a fellow enjoy himself in peace?"
There's something very Byerly-sounding about the question, but he fails to achieve even a fraction of the intended mischief. For one thing, he clearly isn't enjoying himself that much.
icasm: (I'm ok I'm not your baby)

[personal profile] icasm 2023-11-19 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'm certain a fellow could, but you are not enjoying yourself from where I'm sitting." Okay Loki is very awake now, because this is an interesting little sort of puzzle, and also because the response irritates him a bit, and he can't quite put his finger on why immediately.

"Did you have a breakup?" It's been a year and some time since he's last seen Bene; could be the man finally got himself a boyfriend. Though Loki narrows his eyes a bit: "It wasn't Byerly, was it?"

Please, please say no.

Benedict is about to give some manner of sarcastic response when he’s instead blindsided by the follow up question and recoils in horror.

“Ew?? No!”

Might as well ask if he’s been seeing his brother. …if he had one, anyway.
