Some of the tension goes out of Tavi's shoulders in response to Byerly's explanation (and also to his exceptionally relaxed body language), and he nods a little the way one might when confirming plans to oneself. Yes, he agrees privately and tries not to smile at the flood of relief he feels. Yes, thank the Maker--at this rate, he just might be able to turn this disastrous failure of a personal quest around, and return to Nevarra City with what he and his mother need to reclaim their lives.

"It's not that I'm ungrateful--quite the opposite, I truly owe you everything right now, but.." He trails off, eyebrows bent into a bewildered furrow over his eyes. "Why are you helping me?"
