Ari Sloane | You, Again: A Novel

III.

Ari was in her element on the stage. Even if that stage was a street corner near the market where she could sing funny songs and gain some silver in the process. Never mind the two daggers hidden on her back, her training as a bard, or the fact that some of the songs had coded messages that only the Riftwatch would understand. Performing was its own reward, but who said she couldn't do a little good while she was at it?

She grinned and announced to the crowd, "This next one is a little on the bawdy side, you might wanna cover the ears of any small children in the audience. It's dedicated to my ex-wife, Cass, an endless source of hilarity." At least Cass was funny now. When the other woman had left her, she'd spent so much time too sad to do anything but mope.

But misery loved company and eventually that love of company turned into the love of a person: Josh, a man she'd once sworn to hate until she died. He wasn't with her, but she knew he was safe. At least for now. He's why she joined the Riftwatch, she'd do anything to keep him safe from harm.

There were songs about Josh, too, though she kept those to herself. But that was for later. Right now, she strummed her lute, and called out "Okay, who wanna hear 'For the love of blondes?' Anyone? Anyone, don't be shy!" And she opened her mouth and sang.

Okay, I know you've all heard this a billion times before, but best tips for a new recruit? I'm trained as a Bard, so that's a bonus. Let's hear it for my fellow bards, yeah?

There's gotta be a private way to send messages in case the other bards don't want everyone to know who and what they are. Right?
