As much as Hermione liked animals, she tended to stay away from the ones with sharp teeth. And with the general ability and apparent desire to eat her.

Given the choice between running and a fight to the death with two bears whilst dragging a complete stranger into the mess, Hermione wasn't exactly eager to prove just how stubborn Gryffindors could be. She also didn't want some other random passerby to end up getting caught in the crossfire, if these woods were as populated as all that.

Groaning at how much she hated these sorts of split-decisions, she was forced to act when one of the bears attempted to charge, and she hit it as hard as she could with a Glacius hex. For some reason, it didn't do nearly as much damage as it would have ordinarily done, but it at least froze half of the bear to the snowy ground, which should keep it out of the way long enough for both of them to survive.

Before she could do anything else, the second bear voiced its clear displeasure, roaring as it charged straight towards her. Clever as she might be, Hermione really, really wasn't good at multitasking under extreme pressure.
