If nothing else, Hermione's just glad that he doesn't take offense to the way she goes on about elves. She doesn't mean to put them under the microscope and exclaim upon them in any sort of clinical way, especially not when it's obvious he's a very different type of elf altogether.

No, the rifts are the portals, so the Fade must be some kind of realm. Is it named because it's special, or do all realms have their own names here?
