We haven't spoken much. Given how many people secretly (or not-so-secretly) think rifters are demons, I'd just like to be able to ensure I'm not making anyone uncomfortable by my mere presence.

I can show them that there's nothing to fear from me. Unless they're stubborn. In which case, I'm not going to force myself on them.

The problem is, I guess, is how do I know you're not just trying to lull us into a false sense of security?

No. And I suppose no one has ever tried to manipulate you, to make you think and behave in a certain way because it aligns with their beliefs or their goals.

You wouldn't. Which is the point. You'd have to trust them, and trust is earned. It can't be earned if you don't give a person the chance to earn it.

It would also be easier to simply stay in bed all day and wait for death. Somehow, most people aren't too fond of that notion.
