TEST DRIVE MEME!

TEST DRIVE MEME

Maybe you’ve been around for a while, or maybe you’re new to the Inquisition. Maybe you’re new to Thedas, having recently fallen from a tear in reality and been collected by uniformed rescuers. Whoever you are, you’ve been sent to Kirkwall, to an outpost where many of the Inquisition’s members and allies work on some of the biggest mysteries and problems the organization must solve if it’d like to keep the world from ending, where “ending” means “falling under the power of an ancient powerful corrupted being who wants everyone to bow to him as a god.”

And just to be clear, it would like that. It would like that a lot.

I. THE GALLOWS: The Gallows is an island fortress in Kirkwall’s harbor. It’s been home to, in order: Tevinter slaves, a Circle of Magi, a lot of creepy red lyrium, and now the Inquisition, which has occupied the fortress with the provisional Viscount’s blessing. There are walls that still need rebuilding and corners that still need dusting, but for the most part the Inquisition has gotten down to business. There’s space in the stone-floored courtyards to train or spar; or, if your skills don’t lie in the realm of hitting things, there’s a large library and several offices supporting the Inquisition’s areas of research and diplomatic efforts. If you don’t know what to do with yourself, then by all means, ask; someone will definitely be able to put you to work.

II. KIRKWALL: A quick row across the harbor will take you to Kirkwall proper. The city is built into the cliffs, from exclusive and wealthy Hightown at the top to impoverished Darktown in the abandoned mining tunnels below. In the middle is Lowtown, home to taverns, merchants, and plenty of trouble to keep anyone looking for it happy. You’re welcome to spend your free time and your money here—but try not to annoy the locals too much, please, in case their welcome runs out. It’d be a shame to have to pack again so soon after arriving.

III. QUESTING: Barely had time to make yourself at home, did you, before you were sent away from Kirkwall again—but this time on a mission. There’s a rift outside of Markham, pouring demons into the fields, and the Inquisition has been asked to lend a hand. Maybe literally. If you have an anchor embedded in your palm, you’re needed to close the damn thing. If not, maybe you’re here to fight demons or guard against bandits on the road, or to gather samples and take notes on the rift’s location once its closed, or to speak to Markham’s nobility afterwards to make sure that they fully appreciate the Inquisition’s efforts. Regardless, it’s a long trip, so we hope you like campfire cooking and sharing a tent.

IV. SENDING CRYSTAL: Joining the Inquisition gets you access to the very latest in barely-understood magical communication devices—namely, a crystal, small enough to wear around your neck, that will allow you to communicate verbally with anyone else who has one. Or everyone else who has one. Say hello.

V. WILDCARD: The whole of Thedas is yours to explore, from coast to uncharted wilderness. Choose your own adventure!

"Lord Biffy. That has an oddly nice ring to it." He laughed a bit then gave a delicate sort of wave of his hand as if to emphasize that point. Really it was just for a flair for the dramatics since that was very in season right now.

"Let's see, I would say we could start under the stars and finish in the tent. Though I believe we shall see what mood strikes us then." He grinned at him and stretched out his legs so his feet could be closer to the fire. His boots were still on but it did allow for some more heat to sink in.

"What is it like where you come from? This world beyond this one?"

When was the last time he had been asked that question? It seemed these days everyone already knew, or perhaps he had begun to blend and no one thought to ask at all. He kept his shard hidden, though on their journey for the moment he had left it unwrapped so it shone green in the fire's light. Unnerving, just barely, and yet beautiful now too. Strange that he had become so accustomed to it even when he knew it was killing him.

Well, if it was doing that, best to live life to the fullest, no?

"Worlds," he corrected Biffy, leaning back some more on his saddle and raising his hand in a slow, grand gesture and pointing through the boughs to the stars beyond. "I'm a captain, in my world. I sail a sea of stars - the view we have now but from all angles - hiding worlds far stranger and more wonderful than you can imagine. And my job is to find them."

dandyofawolf: (Seriously?)

Worlds. Sailing through a sea of starts. It sounded so fantastical. Really one would think they were talking about the stories children told rather than anything real. Still, he was inclined to believe him if only because he was rather good at reading people and the man so clearly felt he was telling the truth. That was something at least.

"A captain of a ship that sails through stars? What sort of ship can accomplish this sort of task?"

Air travel. That was something he knew someone would be interested in for certain.

"A space ship," he offered. He had once been wary of saying such things, but he had long since let go of that.

For one, most people didn't believe he was even telling the truth. Second, even if they did know, it wasn't like he was handing over the tech or the math to even accomplish it. They would have to come by that by themselves. And third, a few people with a new dream wasn't a bad thing. It wasn't like he was creating a new cult with his stories. And on top of all of that, it was damn hard keeping the Prime Directive for so long. He doubted it was meant for situations like this!

"Her name's the Enterprise, mine at least. And she has a beautiful stock of rum." He grinned impishly, though it was true. She was always well stocked in the bar.

A space ship. Amazing how that answered his question while saying nothing at all. The look he gave him showed such amusement. "You realize one here would assume you refer to a ship like one would find on the sea, correct? I know you couldn't be what you are referring to."

Such would be ridiculous so far as he could tell. How would one even get a ship like that into the sky for one. Biffy might not be entirely mechanically minded but he had enough curiosity to study up on things to at least be aware of what things were and were not possible. Sending a sea ship into the sky happened to be one of the impossible ones.

"Come now. I doubt anyone would believe me even if you told me a little more." Well save for the one he was reporting back too but that was a minor detail wasn't it.

Biffy did have a point. It was the reasoning Kirk had used for himself more than once, especially when telling Samouel things, but he could also trust Sam not to go repeating things and making him sound like a mad man (or both of them, for that matter). But if there was one thing Kirk was good at, it was unexpected diversions away from serious topics in particular.

So he smiled at the young lord beside him, leaning in ever so slightly with just a touch of cocky mischief.

"I'm afraid any more information is going to cost you, Biffy."
dandyofawolf: (Cheeky)

Oho! A bargain was it? Well that happened to be something he was particularly good at. Biffy gave him a grin that said as much as he lifted a brow his direction. Cocky mischief was something of a specialty of his so he knew he was going to enjoy this.

"Name your price. Let us see how much this will cost me."

Though that sparkle in his eyes said he was already going to pay up more than likely.

"Hmm, let me think - perhaps - a kiss? For every morsel I give. Not so steep a price, discounted even, for such a lovely companion," he grinned wider, curious to see how Biffy might respond, though he was hoping favorably. It was hardly a secret he was making of his attraction to the other, after all, and he liked to think Biffy was equally interested in more than just his stories.

It was actually adorable how simplistic that request was. A kiss for every morsel of information. Biffy could say he was pleased to have become quite the master in the art so he was sure it wouldn't be that much trouble to convince him to tell him plenty. It helped that he wasn't above kissing for information too.

"Oh? A kiss for each morsel? I think I can afford that." Certainly more savory than something like getting someone drunk anyway. Leaning over, he pressed his lips to the other man's. It wasn't too long a kiss but certainly pleasant with a hint that there would be more to come.

"So, what is my first prize?"
