TEST DRIVE MEME!

TEST DRIVE MEME

While in some alternate, tidier timeline, the War against the Elder One ended years ago, you're not in that timeline. It's 9:46, and there's a war raging in northern Orlais, where the Chantry, aided by the Inquisition, marshalling Orlais and the faithful of Southern Thedas into a new Exalted March against the army of demon-bound Wardens, Red Templars, Venatori loyalists, and darkspawn Corypheus has amassed over the last four years. Rifts are still scattered across the continent, periodically spitting out strangers from strange worlds with green-glowing anchors embedded in their hands. There's no Herald of Andraste to save Thedas. Someone else is going to have to do it.

You're part of (or allied with, recently hired by, imprisoned by, etc.) a new organization that's an offshoot of the Inquisition, dubbed Riftwatch, that consists mainly of the otherworldly new arrivals, rebels and Wardens, and other people who want to prevent the apocalypse without necessarily marching under the Chantry's banner to do it. Their headquarters is an island fortress called the Gallows—formerly a Circle of Magi, more formerly a prison for slaves, but its new occupants have done a good job removing the more grotesque reminders of that past and making the place livable.

Maybe you're here because you want to help. Maybe you need the money (though there isn't much of it). Maybe you acquired an anchor and sticking around is the only way to prevent your hand from falling off. Maybe you've been sent by the Chantry or some other entity to keep an eye on everyone—they're rumored to be a lot of weirdos and troublemakers. Or maybe you're a new rifter and just going where the nice people with swords tell you that you need to go.

OOC: We post Test Drives fairly infrequently! But current players are strongly encouraged to track new top-level comments to the post so they don't miss new arrivals, and new folks should not be shy about commenting just because the post has been up for a while.

I. KIRKWALL: Even when enormous evil darkspawn are trying to take over the known world and you and your colleagues might be the only ones who can truly stop him, you can't work all the time. And when you aren't working, Kirkwall is there for you, with its dingy Lowtown taverns, its flashy Hightown establishments, its market stalls and street musicians and underground network of old mining tunnels inhabited by the disenfranchised and a few violent criminals. Or maybe you can work all the time, and you're in the city to do some official shopping, keep an eye on a suspicious character, or show a potential financial backer a good time. The city is grey, cold, and in places vaguely sinister—but it's home.

II. SUNDERMOUNT: North of Kirkwall lies the highest peak of the nearby mountain range. In more ancient days it was rumored to be the site of unspeakable horrors, but at present prowled by more speakable horrors, like possessed skeletons, shadow warriors, and the rare revenant or varterral. And you've been sent to prowl along with them, inside the winding caves that cut through the peak or over the snow currently coating the paths that wind around it. The reasons vary: maybe you're in search of medicinal herbs, maybe you're tracking a party of suspicious travelers lurking outside Kirkwall, or maybe you just took a wrong turn off the road trying to travel in or out of the city.

III. ORLAIS: Further south, Orlais is weathering the winter and the invasion of its northern territories in its usual style—which is why you're here, in a snow-blanketed manor just outside Val Royeaux, representing Riftwatch at the invitation of a gathering of masked nobility who have gathered to discuss ways to support the war effort while not starving their serfs and alienages. And to play parlor games. Maybe have an occasional chamber concert. Your role may be to actively participate in the planning, or it may be to be charming and noncommital while observing, or it may be to provide an example of a well-behaved rifter/elf/mage/Qunari/Fereldan. Regardless: your best behavior is expected, but that doesn't mean you can't sneak into the Duchess' very well-appointed library at night or slip away to try sliding down the length of a frozen reflecting pool in the gardens.

IV. THE FRONT: Riftwatch is no longer part of the Inquisition or directly engaged in the war that it, the Chantry's faithful Exalted Marchers, and Orlais are fighting against an invading Tevinter and Ander force in northern Orlais. But frequently enough, Riftwatch's business—delivering helpful intelligence, spending quality time with prisoners of war that might have information, assisting soldiers with a rift they've found too close to their camps, or passing through on the way somewhere else—requires passing near or through the frontline drawn through northern Orlais and now northern Nevarra, where it's possible to encounter enemy bands of dracolisk-mounted soldiers, fire-throwing mages, or particularly nasty darkspawn with red lyrium growing from their bodies.

V. SEND A MESSAGE: Each member of Riftwatch (or rifter, or ally) is assigned a blue crystal, small enough to wear around the neck, that can transmit voice messages, as well as an enchanted book tied to that crystal that can be used to exchange written messages. They're secure enough to discuss the war, if you'd like to get down to business, but loosely controlled enough to ask a question or play a game with only a few rolled eyes from people who hate fun.

VI. WILDCARD: From the Gallows' library to the pirate islands off the coast, from Hightown's high-priced market stalls to the bloody frontlines of the war, Thedas is yours to explore.

Before Loki can even manage to do anything more than make an annoyed exhalation, the young man who'd run into him has magicked away the alcohol from Loki's clothes. Not that the stain would have been immediately noticeable, given his prediliction towards darker colors, but sometimes it is the enough knowing an aesthetic has been diminished even if no one else can see.

Instead of saying anything right away, Loki holds his glass in one hand and applauds, quietly.

"Well done." They're roughly the same height and Loki has not missed how short most of the elves in Thedas are, so this young man is probably not from here. Not to mention there probably wouldn't be one at this party if they weren't connected to Riftwatch in some way, and thus most likely a Rifter like himself.
voidtransport: and the flesh that only try to erase (never mind such slide of decay)

The bit of clapping disarms him, and then the positive(?) affirmation more so - it's not the reaction he's expecting considering that there's no direct parallel to Prestidigitation here that he's found. It actually bothers him quite a bit that most magic here seems so focused on combat applications, but those are thoughts for another time. Back to the present, Allumin.

"Thank you...? Sorry, I'm... not sure if you're being genuine or patronizing."

Great thing to say after you've already inconvenienced someone. He already regrets it.
icasm: (and I'm talking to myself at night)

[personal profile] icasm 2021-07-14 08:21 am (UTC)(link)
The man laughs; not entirely unkindly, actually. "A little of both, if we're being honest. Don't take it personally, I'm like this with everyone regardless of whether or not they've walked into me recently."

He smoothes the fabric of his shirt before going into a half-bow. "Loki Laufeyson, at your service." He straightens with a flourish. So a Rifter, an elf, and a mage hm? Sounds like you're quite the triple-threat. What is your name?"
voidtransport: to recall the reason I still remain (i've been all but a faceless faded frame)

There's a lot of surprise on Allumin's end, made evident by the way his mouth opens, no sounds come out, and then it shuts again at first. Usually his chronic Foot-In-Mouth syndrome doesn't go over this... well? in conversations. There's a first time for everything, he supposes.

"I'll keep that in mind." He mirrors the little bow. "Allumin Etsija. I'm trained with a rapier too, if that increases my threat level." An earnest attempt at a joke.
icasm: (to the hounds of hell)

[personal profile] icasm 2021-07-15 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
If it helps at all, Loki has enough dumped in his charisma stat to handle the conversation for both of them.

Still, he seems a little amused at Allumin's reaction, face breaking out in a smile. "Not bad, the rapier. Not always a fantastic defense against a thicker blade and definitely not for the frontlines, but not bad at all." It speaks of... aristocracy in Loki's mind. Someone with enough means to learn how to fight in a way that is almost entirely duel-oriented.

He moves to the other man's side and puts his arm around Allumin's shoulder, directing them toward a quieter corner of the party. "And how do you find your visit to Orlais, or Thedas in general?"
voidtransport: that sleep with me at night (adieu to all the faceless things)

[personal profile] voidtransport 2021-07-15 08:10 am (UTC)(link)
It definitely does. It at least helps him feel more at ease, and he doesn't resist as he's led off somewhere quieter.

"If I'm being honest, I was allowed to choose what I wanted to learn, and I thought fencing would look amazing alongside spell-casting if I were ever in a fight," he says, being candid about his inclination towards aesthetic over practicality.

Then he thinks a bit about how to answer Loki's question. There are lots of things to consider that are different and other things that make being here not so strange because they're similar to what he's accustomed to back home.

"Interesting, if I were to summarize it into one word. I think that the magic here suffers from a lack of vision a bit - well, a lot -, but that's probably a by-product of the ill attitude towards it and those who use it."
icasm: (she want a text back)

"It does at that, until some oaf with a greatsword or a rogue with a dagger attempts to get in close range."

Not saying it's a terrible idea, just saying. There's a tray on their way to the quiet corner, arranged with glasses of wine, and Loki grabs one, hands it off to Allumin, and then takes another for himself.

"Hm, agreed. There is, apparently, an ever-present and nearly all-consuming concern that the mages of this world will fall prey to demonic possession." Loki gives a little shrug in the 'what can you do' category of gestures. "But they do have schools on the subject, at least."
voidtransport: to recall the reason I still remain (i've been all but a faceless faded frame)

[personal profile] voidtransport 2021-07-16 07:42 am (UTC)(link)
He accepts the wine with a small "thank you" before taking a sip. "Is that really why?"

Allumin's thought journey that he goes on is a series of questions. Why would that be an issue? Source of magic? Why not figure out a different source? Anti-possessive charms aren't an option? Or, gain a deeper understanding of the demons and find a mutually beneficial way of existing. Warlocks do it all the time, and sure, the results are dicey but there are results if the right person makes a pact.

This whole thought journey can be followed as his expression changes with each step. And then he remembers that he's in someone's company and looks at Loki with an embarrassed smile.

"Sorry - I just can't believe it. That's a step though, paving the way with education." Education... Oh! "I almost forgot, I heard there was a library here and I wanted to see if there was anything interesting. Would you be interested? I don't know if we're allowed there, but that makes it sort of fun to sneak in, right?"
icasm: (back and forth through my mind)

[personal profile] icasm 2021-07-22 12:41 pm (UTC)(link)
"It's the why I've been given; whether or not that's the true reason for a culture based in the fear of magic, I can't really say."

Loki watches the changes in expression cross Allumin's face, sipping his wine and appearing thoroughly bemused. "No need to apologize." He raises his eyebrows. "You want to sneak into the library?"

Finally, some micheif. Loki downs the glass, raises it to smash it, thinks better of it and sets it in a windowsill instead. "Well, we should continue onward then."
voidtransport: but like rubbing wine stains into rugs, it's my curse (i promise you I'll try)

[personal profile] voidtransport 2021-07-29 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
"Ah, wow!" His eyebrows shoot up as well as Loki's wine disappears and he raises the glass (what, why, wh-) before setting it aside. He hurries to follow suit with his own, making a face as he drinks it down as quick as he can before leaving his own glass beside the other. "I thought that would be a harder sell."

But that being said, Allumin doesn't waste any time now that drinks have been discarded to begin an oh-so-casual stride along the edges of the banquet hall to the nearest entrance of the manor's corridors.

"Usually I have to pepper in the allure of forbidden knowledge first." He glances at Loki as he says this, and it doesn't take a cold reader to see the delight in their little impromptu caper. "People think they're above it but can't help being curious after that."
icasm: (to what you were)

[personal profile] icasm 2021-07-29 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
"One thing you'll learn about me, if we are to continue in the vein of this possibly beautiful friendship, is that I am always interested in causing trouble, finding things other people don't want to be found, or breaking into things. Less interested in getting caught, but." A shrug and he waves his hand. What can you do? Sometimes, people get caught doing things they aren't supposed to.

Hopefully sometimes is not the same as tonight, but they'll have to see.

"Forbidden knowledge is quite the allure, actually." But so is just straight up getting up to shenanigans. Loki winks at Allumin. "Do you know where it is? The library."
