Test Drive!

TEST DRIVE MEME

While in some alternate, tidier timeline, the War against the Elder One ended years ago, you're not in that timeline. It's 9:49, and the war continues. An enemy force partially occupies Orlais and has decimated several Marcher Cities, while the Chantry, aided by the Inquisition, has marshaled Orlais and the faithful of Southern Thedas into a new Exalted March against the army of demon-bound Wardens, Red Templars, Venatori loyalists, and darkspawn Corypheus has amassed. Rifts are still scattered across the continent, periodically spitting out strangers from strange worlds with green-glowing anchors embedded in their hands. There's no Herald of Andraste to save Thedas. Someone else is going to have to do it.

You're part of (or allied with, recently hired by, imprisoned by, etc.) an organization, dubbed Riftwatch, that split off from the Inquisition several years ago. Riftwatch consists of these otherworldly new arrivals, rebels and Wardens, and other people who want to prevent the apocalypse without necessarily marching under the Chantry's banner to do it. Their headquarters is an island fortress called the Gallows—formerly a Circle of Magi, more formerly a prison for slaves, but its new occupants have done a good job removing the more grotesque reminders of that past and making the place livable. Their goal is to do what the Chantry can't or won't do, to go more directly after Corypheus and the dark magic he employs, and to keep the Veil from coming apart entirely.

Maybe you're here because you want to help. Maybe you need the money (though there isn't much of it). Maybe you acquired an anchor and sticking around is the only way to prevent your hand from killing you. Maybe you've been sent by the Chantry or some other entity to keep an eye on everyone—they're rumored to be a lot of weirdos and troublemakers. Or maybe you're a new rifter and just going where the nice people with swords tell you that you need to go.

NOTE: This is a static test drive! We post them once per year or so and continue to use them for a long time, so you're never late. Current players are encouraged to track new top-level comments.

I. THE FREE MARCHES: Hasmal, Tantervale, and most recently Starkhaven have all fallen to the Tevinter incursion, leaving Kirkwall the largest city-state in the Free Marches to remain unoccupied. For Riftwatch, that means the war is closer to home than ever, and traveling anywhere north of the mountains runs the risk of running into enemy scouting parties. Perhaps you've been sent out to find these scouts before they find the unwary, or perhaps you're just trying to pass through unnoticed to Antiva or Rivain when you run into trouble. Or maybe you're more in the thick of it: joining the Free Marches armies in harassing the occupying army as best they can from outside the city, or slipping your way into one of them to gather intelligence or meet with an ally.

II. THE WAKING SEA: When Riftwatch isn't traveling by griffon or magic mirror, it frequently travels by sea, courtesy of a small assortment of allied pirate ships. So welcome aboard. The sea is choppy and frequently violent—violent storms, violent enemy ships, or both at once—and the crew may not have much patience for incompetence, so either make yourself useful above or try not to get sick below.

III. KIRKWALL: Even when enormous evil darkspawn are trying to take over the known world and you and your colleagues might be the only ones who can truly stop him, you can't work all the time. And when you aren't working, Kirkwall is there for you with its dingy Lowtown taverns, its flashy Hightown establishments, its market stalls and street musicians and cellars hosting gamblers. (Or maybe you can work all the time, and you're in the city to do some official shopping, try to spy on a suspicious character, or show a potential financial backer a good time.)

IV. SEND A MESSAGE: Each member of Riftwatch is assigned a blue crystal, small enough to wear around the neck, that can transmit voice messages, as well as an enchanted book tied to that crystal that can be used to exchange written messages. They're secure enough to discuss the war, if you'd like to get down to business, but loosely controlled enough to ask a question or play a game with only a few rolled eyes from people who hate fun.

V. WILDCARD: From the Gallows' library to the pirate islands off the coast, from Hightown's high-priced market stalls to the bloody frontlines of the war, Thedas is yours to explore.

By can't help but grin at that thought. If Riftwatch were a real army? Sure. Absolutely. But the webs of loyalty here are so complex as to make the idea of punishment laughable - to say nothing of the hypocrisy of someone judging him.

"I've done worse," he says. Serving as a spy reporting back to Ferelden on the activities of the Inquisition, for example, or lightly drugging the Forces division head with truth serum...And he'd never even been spanked for it.

"Besides, if you only stay a few days, I doubt anyone will have an opportunity to find out."

[This answer comes after a conspicuous delay:]

More and fewer. Our population fluctuates without observable pattern despite ongoing study. The first recorded arrivals took place ~8 years ago. Since then, a system has been established for predicting the time and location of rifter arrivals — hence the friendly company when you emerged from the rift.

Some of the tension goes out of Tavi's shoulders in response to Byerly's explanation (and also to his exceptionally relaxed body language), and he nods a little the way one might when confirming plans to oneself. Yes, he agrees privately and tries not to smile at the flood of relief he feels. Yes, thank the Maker--at this rate, he just might be able to turn this disastrous failure of a personal quest around, and return to Nevarra City with what he and his mother need to reclaim their lives.

(The narrator: What a great plan you've got laid out there, Octavius. Would be a real shame if something happened to it.)

Still, as they amble along towards the doors, he can't help himself--

"It's not that I'm ungrateful--quite the opposite, I truly owe you everything right now, but.." He trails off, eyebrows bent into a bewildered furrow over his eyes. "Why are you helping me?"

Byerly's manner grows grave. His look over at Octavius grows solemn.

"You must keep this information confidential," he says. His voice is low; his manner seems earnest. "And tell no one of it."

Byerly, it must be noted, is quite a talented liar. He does seem convincing as he speaks.

"The reason," he continues, "is that Artemaeus is a friend of mine." Then, still with solemnity, he says, "Swear to me you'll keep that a secret. Most of all from Artemaeus himself."

Tavi buys it, of course. Hook, line, and sinker.

"Of course," he replies, all wide blue-eyed sincerity. "Of course, I swear it."
bouchonne: (smug fuck)

"Good," Byerly says, still solemnly, pressing a hand to his heart.

And then, abruptly flipping to cheer, he asks, "Do you smoke?" And he offers a cigarette over to the lad.

--this man is going to give him whiplash.

Tavi blinks and leans back a fraction when the cigarette is brandished his way. "No," he says, but he's already taking the cigarette anyway because it seems rude to decline. Then he adds, "Just a waterpipe occasionally back in Qarinus, when my cousins would--visit." His voice catches and quiets down because, as they reach the looming gates signifying the entrance to the Gallows itself, a cluster of people come meandering out towards the docks. Conscious of his accent, Tavi lowers his voice and takes an interest in his boots, only to frown in genuine resignation at the state of them.

"So, am I pretending to be your cousin, then?" He glances around once more just to be sure no one is close enough to overhear them. "Just while I'm here, that is."
altusimperius: (i can't fucking believe this)

[personal profile] altusimperius 2023-12-15 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Sauntering out amidst the cluster of people is a tall, dark-headed figure with a cigarette clamped between his lips, his gaze fixed on a scroll he's perusing on his way from one side of the Gallows to the other.

It's been six years since he left Tevinter, and Benedict has taken on a decidedly working-class affect in how he dresses and moves with the crowd, but in the haughty tip of his chin and the sheen of his hair he is, and always will be, unmistakably an Artemaeus.

He hasn't noticed the pair yet, his brow pinched in concentration at whatever it is he's reading while he traverses the courtyard.

"It suits me if it suits you," Byerly responds. "That - " And then he catches sight of his erstwhile assistant, and says, "Ah."

Then he raises a hand and calls out, "Hallo, Artemaeus! Come here, come here." Though he also steps in front of Octavius, keeping him from view, so that Artemaeus (still not especially subtle, despite By's best efforts to make the boy into a fellow weasel) won't have a chance to react while in the midst of others.
quaestionespatris: (having gay feelings probably)

[personal profile] quaestionespatris 2023-12-15 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Tavi's whole expression undergoes another abrupt, incandescent transformation--wide eyes, a sudden rush of self-consciousness, and a hasty attempt to brush more dirt off of his clothes, not that that will undo all the work the grime of the city has put into making him look hard done by--and so it's probably a good thing for all of them that Byerly steps forward to block Benedict's view of him. He draws in a steadying breath, lifts his chin, and then cautiously peers around Byerly's shoulder. peek
altusimperius: (mild amusement)

[personal profile] altusimperius 2023-12-15 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Bene's head pops up to attention, clearly still working off the instinct of being Byerly's assistant, and he swerves to join him.

"You're not going to believe this shit," he mutters, gesturing to the scroll in his hand, "it came just a hair too late, you would've loved it." His eyes cut to the face of the-- is that an urchin?-- behind Byerly's shoulder, but he doesn't register him as anyone significant just yet.
quaestionespatris: (deepest sigh of life)

bouchonne: (hmmm?)

[personal profile] bouchonne 2023-12-15 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh, let's see," Byerly says, and catches Benedict by the shoulder, pretending to look at the scroll while swinging him around to look at Octavius - and, not coincidentally, turning his face away from any potential onlookers who might see an expression of shock.

"By the way," he adds, "do endeavor to play it cool, won't you?"
quaestionespatris: (listen u piece of shit)

surprise!!

[personal profile] quaestionespatris 2023-12-15 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
The not-urchin who is definitely Byerly's distant cousin from out of town tilts his head to catch Benedict's eye. He waves. "Hi."
altusimperius: (horrorstruck)

[personal profile] altusimperius 2023-12-15 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Commence the double-take, and if Byerly hadn't warned him in advance, Benedict might have jumped back a full foot.

"Octavius?" he gasps, and has to catch the cigarette as it falls from his mouth, batting it between his hands before he gets a grip on it.
bouchonne: (lord give me strength)

[personal profile] bouchonne 2023-12-15 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Byerly's sigh is put-upon, and his eyeroll tragic and long-suffering.

"Indeed," Byerly says, "my cousin, Octavius Rutyer, for as long as he chooses to live here. A Soporati of Fereldan descent. Hm?" He arches his eyebrow pointedly.
quaestionespatris: (wasn't talking to u but go on i g)

[personal profile] quaestionespatris 2023-12-15 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Soporatus? Oh no. "Laetan," Tavi interjects somewhat petulantly. If he gets a look of some kind about that, he spreads his hands to either side and hisses back at Byerly, "What am I supposed to say if someone asks me about my trade? All I've studied is spirit healing, I don't know anything about--what do the Rutyers of Qarinus do, exactly?"
altusimperius: (what the shit)

[personal profile] altusimperius 2023-12-15 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
"What--" Benedict does a quick shake of his head and then steps forward, ushering them both to walk with him and get out of the main thoroughfare.

"Did something happen? What's going on?" he asks in a low voice, using his now fully-businesslike tone to mask how violently his heart is threatening to rocket out of his chest.

Is she in the States? There's the flashpanic moment of that thought, then the demon comes swooping in again and she barely ducks out of the way on time - barely, because she feels some of her life force get sucked up into this not-a-Dementor, and it comes with a dizzy spell.

Desperate times call for desperate measures. When someone shouts at her to cast her magic sideways, she is quick to decide that he doesn't mean for her to hold her wand sideways.

An unusual way of casting spells in her world is non-verbal spells. She decides, might as well now. Incendio, she thinks but does not say, slicing her wand across the air in front of her - it sends a mote of pure fire at the demon, making it screech in anger.

"Ah! It worked? I - how did that - more tips, please!"

She receives the book with a grateful sigh, finally research she can relate to. And then Abby asks if she wants anything else, and she realises that this might be the librarian's assistant.

"Ah - anything up there on the different branches of magic here? I'm trying to adjust mine to Thedas, because...well, it works but it also doesnt." A pause. "Also, I'm Hermione."

( it isn't as if she didn't know how much she's missed lexie — like a limb — but it is a sudden, sharp reminder: she has missed her, terribly. it's been close to a decade since her life was violently and permanently altered, and she's learned to appreciate the people around her who make it not merely bearable but worthwhile to keep pressing ahead,

terrible, that lexie should be back here, and why. a terrible relief, too, to be reunited.

she understands iorveth better every day, she thinks, but she understands herself better, too. she could never have made the choice he did.

We persevere.

Oh god, he’s not accustomed to being a teacher, they’d never entrusted him with the novices at Kamar-Taj precisely because he was absolute garbage with them —

But Stephen Strange is quick on his feet, and Hermione Granger is uncommonly quick at picking up magic, and that’s precisely the kind of mind he can communicate with. “More effort,” he explains, hurrying across the glade to take up position beside her. “If your spell is like lifting a box, then consider the box is now heavier. Put in more effort than you’re used to. Haul harder.”

And to demonstrate, he whirls his hands with exaggerated flourish and summons a magical buzzsaw out of reality: it carves its way through the demon, shearing off one of its grey skeletal limbs. It hiss-screams, roils, recoils, before lunging at them again.

"Not up here," with the books about medicinal plants (unless different branches of magic was meant literally?), but Abby decides she's gonna be nice about it. Being new is hard. She says, "Gimme a moment," and walks away.

When she comes back, she has a couple options for Hermione: Magic: a Natural Physical Phenomenon seems like a good read, as does Ecix Hancey's Drawing from the Fade, a staple of their collection that looks very dog-eared. A Working of Magic, The Circle of Magi: A History...

She hands them all over.

"If you can't find what you're looking for in one of these, you could always talk to another rifter about it."
