Test Drive!

TEST DRIVE MEME

While in some alternate, tidier timeline, the War against the Elder One ended years ago, you're not in that timeline. It's 9:49, and the war continues. An enemy force partially occupies Orlais and has decimated several Marcher Cities, while the Chantry, aided by the Inquisition, has marshaled Orlais and the faithful of Southern Thedas into a new Exalted March against the army of demon-bound Wardens, Red Templars, Venatori loyalists, and darkspawn Corypheus has amassed. Rifts are still scattered across the continent, periodically spitting out strangers from strange worlds with green-glowing anchors embedded in their hands. There's no Herald of Andraste to save Thedas. Someone else is going to have to do it.

You're part of (or allied with, recently hired by, imprisoned by, etc.) an organization, dubbed Riftwatch, that split off from the Inquisition several years ago. Riftwatch consists of these otherworldly new arrivals, rebels and Wardens, and other people who want to prevent the apocalypse without necessarily marching under the Chantry's banner to do it. Their headquarters is an island fortress called the Gallows—formerly a Circle of Magi, more formerly a prison for slaves, but its new occupants have done a good job removing the more grotesque reminders of that past and making the place livable. Their goal is to do what the Chantry can't or won't do, to go more directly after Corypheus and the dark magic he employs, and to keep the Veil from coming apart entirely.

Maybe you're here because you want to help. Maybe you need the money (though there isn't much of it). Maybe you acquired an anchor and sticking around is the only way to prevent your hand from killing you. Maybe you've been sent by the Chantry or some other entity to keep an eye on everyone—they're rumored to be a lot of weirdos and troublemakers. Or maybe you're a new rifter and just going where the nice people with swords tell you that you need to go.

NOTE: This is a static test drive! We post them once per year or so and continue to use them for a long time, so you're never late. Current players are encouraged to track new top-level comments.

I. THE FREE MARCHES: Hasmal, Tantervale, and most recently Starkhaven have all fallen to the Tevinter incursion, leaving Kirkwall the largest city-state in the Free Marches to remain unoccupied. For Riftwatch, that means the war is closer to home than ever, and traveling anywhere north of the mountains runs the risk of running into enemy scouting parties. Perhaps you've been sent out to find these scouts before they find the unwary, or perhaps you're just trying to pass through unnoticed to Antiva or Rivain when you run into trouble. Or maybe you're more in the thick of it: joining the Free Marches armies in harassing the occupying army as best they can from outside the city, or slipping your way into one of them to gather intelligence or meet with an ally.

II. THE WAKING SEA: When Riftwatch isn't traveling by griffon or magic mirror, it frequently travels by sea, courtesy of a small assortment of allied pirate ships. So welcome aboard. The sea is choppy and frequently violent—violent storms, violent enemy ships, or both at once—and the crew may not have much patience for incompetence, so either make yourself useful above or try not to get sick below.

III. KIRKWALL: Even when enormous evil darkspawn are trying to take over the known world and you and your colleagues might be the only ones who can truly stop him, you can't work all the time. And when you aren't working, Kirkwall is there for you with its dingy Lowtown taverns, its flashy Hightown establishments, its market stalls and street musicians and cellars hosting gamblers. (Or maybe you can work all the time, and you're in the city to do some official shopping, try to spy on a suspicious character, or show a potential financial backer a good time.)

IV. SEND A MESSAGE: Each member of Riftwatch is assigned a blue crystal, small enough to wear around the neck, that can transmit voice messages, as well as an enchanted book tied to that crystal that can be used to exchange written messages. They're secure enough to discuss the war, if you'd like to get down to business, but loosely controlled enough to ask a question or play a game with only a few rolled eyes from people who hate fun.

V. WILDCARD: From the Gallows' library to the pirate islands off the coast, from Hightown's high-priced market stalls to the bloody frontlines of the war, Thedas is yours to explore.

I. Arrival/Kirkwall

[Peter's first thought upon emerging from the bright green...portal? is that of 'oh shit, did I break the multiverse again?!' Trying not to panic (and mostly succeeding), Peter, in his shiny new Spider-Man suit, glances around at the place where he's emerged, and tries to figure out where he is, because New York City, this place isn't.]

Okay, this is fine?

[He turns around, taking in the wilderness around him, the vivid greens and...oh shit, is that a Dementor breathing ice at him?!]

Whoa, hey! Um, this isn't Azkaban is it? You're not about to suck out my soul through my mouth, right, because, like, no offense, but you look like terrible kissers.

[That ice breath is damn cold, and so Peter ducks and moves out of the way, only to find that, hey, there's two other Dementors (not!Dementors?) in his path.]

Okay, so. This isn't fine.

II. Kirkwall - The Hanged Man

[After Peter hears the explanation of where he is and what's expected of him as a Rifter, and after he finds a way to trade in his suit for clothing that makes him feel like a hobbit, he eventually makes his way to the tavern known as the Hanged Man. It feels weird ordering a drink when he's legally underage back home but after the day he's had? It's the least he can do to cope with this newfound adventure of traveling to other universes.

He doesn't have much coin on him at the moment, so he settles for the cheapest drink and the cheapest food item off the menu.

As he waits for both, he turns to the person sitting next to him and nervously starts up a conversation before he can think better of it.]

So uh. This the kind of place where everyone knows your name?

III. Send A Message; un: queens

Okay, so. Any tips for a newbie? Places I should avoid, sights to see, etc.?

arrival

[personal profile] favoriteanalyst 2023-05-03 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
[He's seen weird shit come out of rifts before. Jude showed up as a massive wolf that took care of a lot of the demons and nasties before shifting into a handsomely naked fella. Pretty weird.

At least this guy(?) looks to be in a general human shape already. But those are some bold colors in an outfit that looks hard to breathe in. Is it an outfit? Maker, please let that be an outfit and not actual skin. That might be too weird.

(Although. It niggles something familiar, from back in those not-weeks in not-actually-New York. One of Stark and Strange's allies?)]

Clear the way! [Is maybe not the most helpful advice, but the person-being doesn't look like he's got any weapons on him. Mobius is more than happy to take up a little fighting while he's still able, slashing at the definitely-not-a-dementor with his sword in one hand, raising the shield to block the chill with the other.]

They'll keep coming if that rift doesn't get closed. [Presumably some shard bearers have come along to help with just that, but also presumably, this colorful lad probably has a shard and might be able to figure out how to help. (If Mobius could tell him how it worked, he would. But it's a mystery to him.)]

Re: arrival

[personal profile] heartstumbles 2023-05-03 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
[Peter turns when he hears the voice, startled but also glad to realize he isn't alone. Also, he definitely doesn't need to be told twice, not when those creatures refuse to stop breathing ice on him. (Where do they get all that energy? Magic? Even with his complicated relationship with magic, Peter has to admit: he's kind of jealous, in a way.)

He jumps into a somersault, rolling out of the way with adept agility. He'd attempt to swing away, but from where he is, Peter can't find a good object for support to swing between.

He glances at the rift, apparently, that he came out of, the rift that seems like a portal and yet isn't. As he brings up his hand, he realizes that he seems to have a glowing light the same color as the rift embedded in said hand.

The number of questions he has certainly jumps up.]

How do we close that thing? With this?

[He waves over to the man with the sword and shield, gesturing to what he has stuck in his hand.]
favoriteanalyst: (make a mercy out of me)

[Wow, okay, this guy's got moves. Really impressive moves. The kind of moves that make an old man used to wearing heftier armor feel old. Is Mobius just old now? All these kids coming out of rifts.

He takes another swing and does some damage, enough to get the damned demon to back off even if it doesn't succumb to its wounds right away.]
Yeah! With that! It's the same kind of energy! [Hooray for being marked by the Fade in such a way that it kind of sort of slowly kills you don't worry about it nobody's worried about it-]
heartstumbles: (Broadway is dark tonight)

[personal profile] heartstumbles 2023-05-03 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
[Peter nods and tries to keep his sense of excitement contained. Alas, his nerdiness seeps through any and all attempts at Trying To Be Cool.]

The same kind of energy? What kind of energy? Radiant? Nuclear?

[Peter manages to not ask every immediate question that comes to mind as he aims the piece of rift in his hand at the rift itself.]

Dude, is that a sword and shield?! That's awesome! Also, what are these things that breathe ice?
favoriteanalyst: (when this house don't feel like home)

[personal profile] favoriteanalyst 2023-05-05 02:30 pm (UTC)(link)
[Some of those are words! They are definitely words.] Fade energy. [Far as he understands it. Whether that means anything to the newcomer doesn't matter so much immediately.]

Do people not usually use swords and-or shields where you're from? Pretty standard equipment. And that is a demon of despair. Keep your wits up, [said, turning in a smooth circle to block some more ice] they can shoot it from a distance, too!
heartstumbles: (Everything has changed)

[personal profile] heartstumbles 2023-05-05 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)
[Peter tilts his head.] Fade energy? Huh. That's a new one for me.

[Peter's Spider-Sense, luckily, seems to be intact, and that gives him a head's up when another of the despair demons starts breathing ice in his direction. He jumps and rolls out of the way, just barely avoiding the ice as it grazes the back of his head.]

Well, yes and no? It kind of depends. Mostly people use guns, but I knew a guy who was really good with a shield.

[Peter twists to avoid another blast of ice his way.] Do these despair demons have any weaknesses?
favoriteanalyst: (and tuck your demons into bed)

[personal profile] favoriteanalyst 2023-05-07 08:54 am (UTC)(link)
Killing them? I find that works pretty well. [The one thing he hates about these rifts and trying to wrangle newcomers. It's being dropped in the middle of a fight they have no reason to be prepared for. Fight first, play catchup later.] You got any fire on you somewhere? Works wonders.
heartstumbles: (Before the dreams I wanted)

[personal profile] heartstumbles 2023-05-07 03:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Fair enough. [Peter nods as he maneuvers around another attack. If nothing else, this kind of fighting keeps him on his toes, and it's helping him with his reflexes.]

No fire, unfortunately. [He glances at the bright green light glowing out of his hand for a moment.] Hey, does this shard thing do any kind of damage to these demons?

[If not, he thinks, he has something of a back-up plan. If he can find a couple of sticks on the ground, he'll be able to make use of friction to make fire.]

II. Kirkwall

[personal profile] brothergoblin 2023-05-07 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
[ There's way too much to parse and neatly make sense of. Tyler's like a dog with a bone when it comes to most things but even he's got to take a second to just... remind himself to breathe.

It's what he's been trying to do since he pitched up at this tavern. The air feels close, warm, and the scent of stale ale is giving him weird ideas about what Oktoberfest must be like. Not that he'd know firsthand but his imagination has always been impressive.

He's thinking about that when the guy who'd shown up just recently decides now's a great time to strike it big in the conversation department. Honestly, Tyler doesn't blame him. Maybe this kid looks around the same age as him. Maybe the same age as some of the kids he mentored at Fireweed. Even if the Fireweed attitude is lacking. ]

Uh.

[ He looks around as if he's not already gotten an eyeful of their surroundings. ]

Yeah. I mean... it's got that vibe. Small town bar where nobody's business is safe.
heartstumbles: (That swallow the light from the sun)

[personal profile] heartstumbles 2023-05-07 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
[Peter has a habit of talking without thinking, especially when he's nervous. And he still doesn't really know what to make of Thedas, Kirkwall, or this tavern in general. So turning to his nearest neighbor at the bar is all but instinct, the words leaving his mouth essentially of their own accord.

He nods and grins, glad that his abrupt ice-breaking hasn't seemingly scared this young man off.]

Right? I feel like there's probably several different rumors and secrets spreading right now. And judging from the bloodstains, I'm not going to be surprised if we see a fight, probably with knives.

[He considers a moment before holding out his hand.] I'm Peter, by the way. I'm...kind of new to town. How about you?
brothergoblin: (04)

[personal profile] brothergoblin 2023-05-08 12:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Probably.

[ Some of these things Tyler's a lot more used to than others. Small town type bars being rumor mills? Sure. When people have nothing better to do, what else are they going to gossip on? Knife fights? Less that. Even if he hadn't been shipped off to Fireweed when he'd barely turned 11, Delos Crossing wasn't exactly rife with crime. Not against people, anyway. Not with knives, so much.

Scissors, though...

And yet he does he best not to appear too disturbed at the new set of circumstances he finds himself in, even if he is. ]

Tyler.

[ The hand outstretched is met with his own firm but blisteringly brief handshake before he pulls his hand back. ]

If you couldn't tell, I'm a baby here, too. [ A brief pause, and then: ] How old are you? You look younger than I am.
Edited (DW wanted to post the tag before I was ready D:) 2023-05-08 12:25 (UTC)
heartstumbles: (I've been standing up)

[personal profile] heartstumbles 2023-05-08 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
[Peter grins and chuckles at the whole 'baby' comment. He feels too old to be considered any kind of youth anymore but he knows that how he feels doesn't change the fact that he seemingly has perpetual babyface. He thinks of MJ and Ned teasing him for it, and his chest aches, the way it always does, when he thinks of all he's lost.]

I'm eighteen, and you? I definitely feel younger just by sitting in this bar. Maybe we can stick it out and be babies together.

[He can't even seem to grow facial hair, though, who knows? Maybe in this place, he will. He's kind of always wanted a beard, like the dwarves in Lord of the Rings.

A thought occurs to him a moment later, and he considers Tyler with a curious look, tilting his head in the process.]

Did you come through one of those rifts too?
brothergoblin: (10)

[personal profile] brothergoblin 2023-05-09 09:08 am (UTC)(link)
[ Tyler's eyes widen just a touch - really wasn't kidding when he said baby. There's some part of him that's almost glad he's found somebody closer in age than some of the older people he's come across.

Not that he needs anybody, obviously. ]

Twenty-two. I guess at least that makes one of us legal to be up here.

[ At the bar, he means. Not that he's got any interest in finding out if they even have a legal drinking age here. What does it matter to him?

The invitation to stick together though is appreciated on some level. As much as he'd like to think he's perfectly capable of striking out on his own, that's not completely accurate. Fireweed was a steep learning curve for sure, but it was also easy to get somewhat institutionalized there. ]

Yeah, fell out of one of them like somebody shook this place too hard. Like when you shake a keyboard and all the bits come out.
heartstumbles: (Subtle as always)

[personal profile] heartstumbles 2023-05-10 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
[Peter chuckles at that before taking another sip of his drink with a slight wince. He isn't sure what his drink is, exactly; being as broke here as he is back home, he'd only been able to order the cheapest drink on the menu. Given the way said drink seems to burn down his throat like acid, Peter thinks he's at least probably killing any potential harmful bacteria.]

I'm not sure what the legal drinking age is here. Something tells me it's younger than twenty one.

[Given that the bartender is serving him and that this place feels and looks medieval, if he has to guess. He also guesses that the beer here is safer to drink than the water, but he doesn't say that part out loud.

When he describes falling out of a rift, Peter nods, grinning.]

I think some parts of me are still being shaken out, honestly.
brothergoblin: (02)

[personal profile] brothergoblin 2023-05-11 01:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Pretty good assumption. I'm surprised they're not all buzzed 100% of the time with what's going on out there.

[ Which is an ounce over what seems reasonable to Tyler. Whatever happened to good old fashioned global warming? How is that not spicy enough for this world?

Acknowledging he's not home anymore provokes a spike of home sickness. Not for home as a place, but home as in the people who'd be worried sick for him here. ]

Where are you from? My brain's been imagining a watershoot between this world and mine but I guess that's not exactly right.
heartstumbles: (Beside everything I ever said)

[personal profile] heartstumbles 2023-05-13 02:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, maybe they are, and they're just that good at making it look like they aren't, you know?

[Like magic, in a way. Or maybe actual magic, considering that magic exists here, seemingly in abundance, from what he's seen and been told. Which tracks with his luck, all things considered. Magic ruins his life and he ends up in a world rife with magic. Perfect.

He takes another sip, managing not to wince this time. Maybe all the nerve endings in his throat are dead now, preventing him from really feeling the burn this time.]

Queens. And you?
brothergoblin: (09)

[personal profile] brothergoblin 2023-05-14 01:53 pm (UTC)(link)
[ All things considered, Queens could be a different world considering the vast difference in pace of lifestyle. But at least it's a place that Tyler instantly recognizes by name.

Something that had been coiled up tight inside him loosens a fraction. It's relief that he can feel start to uncurl in his chest. ]

Tiny backwater town in Alaska called Delos Crossing.

Nobody recognizes the name. I was on my way to Denali though. Plan is-- was?-- to train as a park ranger.
heartstumbles: (Sitting in an old man's bar)

[personal profile] heartstumbles 2023-05-14 05:46 pm (UTC)(link)
[Peter arches an eyebrow.] You're from Alaska? That's so cool! What's it like living out there?

[Having been born and raised in the city his whole life, Peter is always curious about growing up in the suburbs and the country. He can't imagine not being able to run right down the block to grab a quart of milk at nine thirty at night.

He can't say that he's heard of Delos Crossing, but when Tyler mentions training as a park ranger, Peter perks up, curious.]

A park ranger, huh? That's awesome! What would that entail?

[He's grateful for the chance to focus on Tyler right now, his own life comfortably tucked away in the recesses of his own thoughts.]
brothergoblin: (10)

Sorry this is so late!!

[personal profile] brothergoblin 2023-05-26 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Literally cool. Cold, even.

[ The sparkle in Tyler's eyes always seems to catch when he's making jokes. It's not that he doesn't get they're corny, he just enjoys them too much to worry how other people find them.

But the conversation so far has been pleasant enough and this kid is enthusiastic in ways he's not come across really. Ever. So Peter gets a Tyler Ronan joke he can do with whatever he pleases. Once he's sure the joke has landed, he grins and starts about answering the second question. ]

Y'know, the usual stuff. Always liked working with the land and the idea of working to preserve it sits right in my head. Plus... if I can get through to just one person about why it's important to look after our National Parks... seems worth it.

[ There he pauses momentarily before: ]

And that's a lot of space where I can avoid people totally if I want to.
heartstumbles: (Been traveling in packs)

No worries!

[personal profile] heartstumbles 2023-05-28 03:30 pm (UTC)(link)
[Peter laughs at that.]

Yeah, that makes sense. Do you get to see a lot of polar bears?

[Peter would love to have the chance to travel, to visit places like Alaska. He's been lucky (or unlucky, depending on who you ask) enough to go to space but there's still so much of the world he'd like to see down on Earth. New York will always be home, of course, but Peter wants to broaden his horizons.

Although, all things considered, being here in Thedas now? Kind of technically further broadening his horizons.

As he explains about his job, Peter listens. He cares a lot, he thinks, and that is really cool. Peter admires him for wanting to work to help protect the environment; it's always awesome to come across people who want to make the world a better place.]

That's awesome! We definitely need to take better care of our national parks, that's for sure. Plus, to be surrounded by all of that nature? That's gotta be good for the soul or something right?

He has no idea how to begin this, much less what good it'll do, but he should maybe see if any of the people he knows... knew... are still here, in Thedas. (He's suspecting the answer is a resounding laugh followed by a series of gravemarkers, actually.)
]

Say you died and woke up here one day. Kinda common, yeah? At least it ain't fucking uncommon.

Say that was some time ago. Years.

Say you left. Over a year and a half ago? Not by any choice, you just... fuckin' up and vanished, far as you can tell. And you returned right back to being dead, where you're from. In an afterlife. All'a dat shit.

Whether or not you believed in it, before. The afterlife, I mean. Or other worlds, before you ended up in this one.

So. You're here, again. Dead, but not, yanno? Schrodinger's Asshole, or some such shit.

What happens next?

...Wait, do I gotta fuckin' do quarantine again? Fuck, man.

[Peter is fascinated by the crystals as a method of communication. He's tempted to try and study the crystals by taking the one he obtained through Riftwatch apart, but he figures that he probably shouldn't experiment on what seems like a fairly important and vital tool.

He arches an eyebrow as he listens to someone asking about death and the afterlife in relation to finding themselves back here in Thedas. He has...so many questions, but he manages to restrain himself. Mostly.]

I didn't realize people could leave, let alone leave and come back. I kind of thought we were all...stuck here.

I just got here recently myself so I can't say for sure whether they'll make you quarantine again. Maybe some kind of compromise? Maybe you won't have to quarantine as long?

That...probably doesn't help, sorry.
