TEST DRIVE MEME!

WHAT A GLOOORIOUS FEELING

WE'RE STILL IN THE HINTERLANDS

How’s the weather, Inquisition? Terrible. Heavy rainfall pelts the plains and the mountains, four straight days of it! Dark clouds block out the sun. It may begin to feel like there’s no end to the storms in sight. When darkness falls, cold evening temperatures turn that rain frigid. Your boots, your socks, they’re soaked through. Everyone smells like wet wool.

And as if all that weren’t enough: the increased rainfall loosens patches of mud and shale, causing mudslides.

1. We’re not in Orzammar anymore…
A recent group of dwarven traders bearing fine crafts and goods were inbound for Skyhold, ready to flood the markets with their wares. Instead, they got flooded out.

Yes, word has reached the Inquisition that the traders have been unfortunately detained by the weather and they are now in need of a rescue. Dare you venture out into the lashing rain and sliding mud to rescue the traders?

If you do so dare, you’ll find some of the traders to be exceedingly grateful for your efforts, ready to bestow handsome rewards on you, O Brave Soul -- just as soon as you’ve escorted them safely back to Skyhold. Or you might find a cluster of more disagreeable traders, grumpy at the water in their boots and the loss of their goods. Some of those goods might still be rescuable, if you want to wade out into a mud field to retrieve a fallen chest, or tug an errant terrified donkey back onto what’s passing for dry road these days.

As you carry these treasures back to their masters, or back to Skyhold, you might consider helping yourself to a sampling of the wares on your way back. After all, your reward might not be adequate, and you are risking your life for these ungrateful sons of mothers. Just don’t get caught. These traders don’t look kindly on thieves, and frayed tempers snap easily.

Feel free to get stuck on your way to the rescue, too. Weather out the storm with a fellow do-gooder. These days, the rescuers might need rescuing just as much.

2. Are you mad? That’s twelve year old scotch!
In Skyhold and the surrounding tent towns, what with the confusion and the panic and the scramble for high ground, market stalls are left unattended and wares are ripe for the taking. For some, temptation proves to be too much. Where there’s disaster, there’s often looting! A few vendors defend their own wares, and those that can’t make desperate entreaties for assistance. Bandits! Thieves!

Are you a brave and hale friend to the Inquisition and to good honest trade, ready to defend the wares of the waterlogged merchants? Or maybe your sticky fingers spot a tempting treasure too great to ignore. If they didn’t want it stolen, they should have taken it with them! Watch out for that Qunari metalsmith with the mean right hook. He’s not to be trifled with, and his blow will leave you toothless in the mud.

3. I gotta go, Julia, we got bears.
The rainfall has disturbed more than the mud. Bears, resting in their caves, have found their caves to be too damp for their liking, and they’ve taken to the open air to vent their spleens. Some people say that the bears are as frightened as you are, but when you’re faced with a six hundred pound beast with huge pointy teeth, their innocence is a little harder to keep in perspective.

The tents surrounding greater Skyhold are especially worried by rogue bears. Make a stand against them, or else help evacuate a threatened campsite. Mudwrestling a bear is a great way to impress the ladies, or the gentlemen… but no one will blame you for beating a hasty retreat.

4. We got 12 skins of water, 56 ales, two vodkas, four whiskeys, six bottles of wine, tequila, hazelnut paste, cheese, bread, eggs, bananas, apples, bacon, steaks, pancakes, dry grain, milk, sweet tomato sauce, half a pudding, half-ounce Sour Wine, 3 1/2 grams Grand Inquisitor Kush, one ounce of 'shrooms, 15 ecstasy potions, a smutty woodcut, a bat…
TIME TO HUNKER DOWN. In the tavern, the barkeep is handing out free spiced wine to anyone who takes refuge behind her door. The din of conversation and lutesong makes a fine lullabye for the careworn traveler, and you might find yourself inadvertently dropping off to sleep. Or maybe someone’s fallen asleep on you.

Who can blame the slumberers, finally safe and warm and dry? In the tavern, the fires have been built up to ward off the chill and the damp, but relaxation is a little more difficult these days. You really have to elbow your way in there to get close to that warmth. Once you get close enough, you’ll find that the hearths are taken up with dozens and dozens of wet socks and wetter boots, steaming gently as they dry. Be disgusted if you want, or else peel off your own and go barefoot while you wait.

Hey! What’s going on over there? Someone’s taking one of your socks! Stop, thief!

If you can’t make it to the tavern, you might find yourself holed up somewhere a little more unlikely. The limited space within Skyhold means there aren’t a lot of free rooms. That door you shoulder open in desperation might have an owner already. Intrusions aren’t always unwelcome, but beware of what -- or who! -- you might find.

5. Lots of fish… and lots of weather.
WILDCARD. Whatever you do, just remember: there’s a lot of rain, you’re very wet, and if you’re feeling amorous, keep in mind that everyone smells like wet wool. We cannot stress this enough.

[Varric considers this and makes a strained sort of hum in the back of his throat as he does.]

Well...Buttercup might, but...probably not from you. You might want to make an attractive female friend and get her to ask--

[No, that was still likely to get him stuffed full of arrows.]

On second thought, the Qunari might be the easier sell. They will probably try to kill you, of course, but that's just sort of how they do things.

Could you find out from her?

[ Because clearly you're in the know, Varric. ]

Yes, that happens often. Or it would, if I were usually present around people.

[ There is a faint smile, but it's hardly a friendly one. ]

Those that follow me are hunted and killed, assuming they are not able to outmaneuver their hunters, whether physically or politically. Any Overseer able to kill me would be revered until civilization forgot the Abbey ever existed.

[ That probably sounds a bit like bragging. At least he mostly sounds like he's just stating facts. ]

There are very few people in the area who can manage to lift up Korrin and it makes her laugh, reminding her of when she didn't tower over nearly everyone. It's certainly felt like forever to her, and she can't speak for a moment thanks to the wave of nostalgia. Korrin's never silent for long, though.

"Far too long, I know. Did you come with Lena, or did Shokrakar finally decide I ought to have more back-up?" The last time Lena arrived, she had been alone, so Korrin hadn't thought to ask her about any other of the company. It serves her right for assuming.

Korrin is placed back down onto her feet, and Hissera still wears her smile, all too glad to be in the presence of someone familiar again.

"Oh, I came with Lena! I think she went out on a job, and I just came back from one myself. I think we were supposed to meet back up here? She said the tavern and this is the only one I saw so I came here. And here we are!"

Hissera looks at the mage curiously. "How is the Inquisition? I've only just come along to it, but I've heard a lot of things! There was a party with the nobles? How was that? Did you go?"

It really has come to this… Kain doesn’t even try and correct her about the pet, he’s there to stay and he’s completely Kain’s pet at this point. He sighs, patting the bird on the head before pulling out some nuts to give to occupy him for a moment.

“The name’s really stuck at this point. Ah… right, and I’m Kain Highwind. I’m… not from around here. It’s probably all too obvious.” He wears his dragoon armor pridefully, not about to ever let go of that part of his world. “And you are…?”
dragoon_pride: (arms folded)

[personal profile] dragoon_pride 2016-04-21 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
Kain nods, taking his seat and waiting for her to join him.

“It’s a long story. After I departed for Mount Ordeals… I was only there a matter of months before I ended up drawn into another world. My memories were erased as I was forced to fight endlessly in a war that seemingly had no end. After that… well, there’s more to it, of course, but after that I came to be here.” There were a lot of difficult situations during that war, including having to betray his comrades for good, but it’s a lot to explain here and now.

Besides, he needs to tell her more about this world. If she’s likewise stuck here, she deserves to know more. “I’ve been here for nearly half a year. There are many threats to this world… and I’ve joined with the Inquisition to serve as a warrior and fight these threats.” Many people have different reasons for joining, for him it’s about getting to fight terrible evil. Conquering demons and other dark things is his way of atoning in a sense.

Mmm. Invisible ones, bug lookin ones, ones that fight with their hair... you name it.

[ alvin glances down at his mud caked boots, plus the two inches of dirty water that nearly is swamping his toes, and sighs, adjusting his grip on the crate once again. ]

Eh, don't sweat it. I'm gonna have to go back out there in a little bit anyway.

[ and as if to prove his point, he jerks his head in the direction of the merchant he's working for (who is looking annoyed that its taking so long for alvin to come back but also... doesn't seem to want to get involved now that al's talking to the floating guy), and then the mess of wares in the swampy area that used to just be a field. ]

Maybe I'll charge him by the hour, and take my time.

Korrin chooses a seat at the nearest table and signals for some of that spiced wine. They're going to be here a while, so they might as well be comfortable. "Of course I went. My girlfriend was attending, and I wasn't about to miss the chance to dance with her and rub it in the faces of all those nobles. That was worth all the stares, and the empty-headed woman who wanted to touch my horns. And after a while, we cut out and went to the real party in the valley, the kind with better hooch, better music and none of that stuffiness."

If Danae had any nuts, she'd pass them along, a little tickled at the notion of such a foul-mouthed bird. That has to be quite a conversation starter, as proven now. "I'm Danae, Second of Clan Ghilain and one of Sister Nightningale's agents. That's why I'm not often here, since she needs eyes everywhere. And wings and whatnot. I'm a shapeshifter."

"She is a singular person," Ellana agrees. "Her confidence and wisdom is inspiring. She never holds back on giving her opinion either. I've been trying to approach situations wondering what Morrigan would do in my place."
enasalin: (quirky smile)

[personal profile] enasalin 2016-04-21 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
"Make everyone fear her, probably." Danae flashes a grin, taking another sip. "I prefer a less antagonistic approach, but I suppose that has its place. At least it's not directed at us; from what I've heard, her interest in our lore seems genuine."

[personal profile] serannas 2016-04-21 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well, can you picture me being able to make others fear me?" That question is coupled with a quirk of her brow. "But she has such a way of cutting into people with words, and lets nothing said to her in return affect her. I want to be able to do that too. Not the fear part, but the confidence part."

"She's been a great source of lore, too. I've learned more from her than I have my Keeper." Which shouldn't be surprising when one knows how Ellana was treated as the extra mage who didn't need to learn about being a Keeper herself, because she would never be one.

"Yes, I can. You're be utterly terrifying." Danae nods solemnly, though there's an amused glint in her eyes. Ellan might be able to manage it marginally better than Danae, who's as intimidating as a fennec, but that's not saying much. Her expression turns sympathetic, nodding as she can see Ellana's thought process and the logic in it. "Alright, that confidence part makes more sense, as does the lore. I think it's already made a difference. You seem far better off for having someone helping you to excel in such things. And I have no doubt you'll go far with them."

"Fine, yes," she replies a little haltingly, slowly withdrawing her arrow and placing it back in her quiver. With a little effort she steps cautiously towards the fallen bear and the qunari woman.

"And you? I couldn't see if it managed to attack."

"Just the one, I'm afraid," she's not annoyed, really. She's actually smiling as she shifts in her seat a little, holding out her hand.

"My name is Andra. I would have introduced myself before, but you seemed sleepy." Still a little off center from the looks of it too, poor thing. At least she fell asleep on someone who isn't likely to mind.

"It did, but my barrier held." Finally looking up from the bear, Korrin places her staff atop her back once more, the glowing spirit blade winking out and leaving just the hilt, which she places at her waist.

"Fucking bears. I swear the Breach drove them all mad, even the cubs. It's almost sad, but better them than us." She'll let the elf or someone else take the hide, as they please. There's enough to do on her end that she's not going to waste her time on it.

The summoner looks around for a chair- a stool- anything for a while before giving up and just sitting on the floor in front of him. It's not a big deal anyway, she's already kind of wet and the woman is used to sit on the ground considering how much time she spends with creatures and monsters.

"I see..." So the last time they met, at least from his point of view, it was after defeating Zeromus? "That's certianly a lot to deal with. I'm sorry, even if I don't completely understand your situation. And- I'd love to hear it all, if and when you'll have time,"

Rydia nods in his direction, now forgetting about her poor drink (that was taking forever anyway- did they still have to milk the cow or what?) and just offering him her complete attention "Half a year... I assume six months are a long time. I just arrived and I'm still trying to understand what to do or not- if there are people to protect I'll be likely to raise my stuff but things here don't seem so black and white." she shrughs "Well, at least I feel better knowing I can trust my back to someone now. Because if you're okay with it I'd love to consider you my comrade again."

Gross.

The word was replaying in her head, like she'd set a song to auto-repeat. The weather was gross, the smell was gross, even she felt gross. She missed L.A. desperately. It wasn't just her friends and her clothes (although last season's Burberry trench that hung in her closet would have been mighty handy right now), but it was heart-wrenching to think of all that sun and beach and palm tree just going to waste. If she ever got out of here--no, when she got out of here--she vowed to herself that she would never let a single day of sunshine go by unappreciated.

At least she could comfort herself with spiced wine, which was admittedly pretty tasty, in a sort of Renaissance Festival way. With the drink in her hand, Cordy settled herself in a window seat to wring out her hair and look out at the gloomy environment.

"I'm not saying this is catastrophe on a Noah's Ark level," she said to no one in particular as she peered out at the rain, "But if I start to see any nugs or druffalo go marching two-by-two in the direction of a boat, I'm buying a ticket."

Ariadne was playing a local card game. Well, to be more accurate, she was cheating, but that wasn't quite obvious. It was really simple, actually. Just a matter of basic mathematics, something she'd always been talented with. After familiarizing herself with the rules, the cards in the deck, and the values of each, it was easy enough to turn a single coin that Katniss had given to her into a rather large pile.

Unfortunately, the charm that originally had earned her an invitation to the game had turned somewhat sour as the night wore on and as she continued to win. She could smell it as the adrenaline around her rose and pulses quickened.

She tried to lose a few hands, but that didn't help.

And anyway, she wanted to use the money to help fund Katniss' building project.

And so it happened that after winning yet another hand, one of the men at the table stood up, violently flipping his chair over and pounding his fists on the table.

Definitely time to escape...

Eliot had long since given up any pretense of needing a reason to drink. Still, if anyone was going to press him on it, the stresses of adjusting to a new world even more unfamiliar than the last one would do. The horrendous weather was just the icing on the shit cake.

He'd been standing not far from the window when she'd sat down, his own wine glass hanging from his hand, alternating between gazing sideways out at the rain and surveying the room for the next distraction. The reference to Noah's Ark was like a beacon, a neon sign flaring Hello, fellow Earthling — never mind the mark on her hand that matched his own — and while she wasn't exactly the type of distraction he'd been hoping for, he'd take it for now.

"Despite having done all I can to expunge years of Bible Study from my mind, I'm pretty sure that would lead to repopulating Thedas with their version of Noah and his family." He took a thoughtful sip of wine. "Personally, I'd stay down here and perish with the sinners."

"It does. I'm glad the Inquisition has allowed you the chance to flourish. It's a pleasant surprise, realizing that there are so many here willing to treat us fairly." Not all, of course, but the majority have been accepting on a scale Danae has never seen before. It's a refreshing change of pace, and does nothing to discourage Danae's usual optimism.

[ as far as he knows, members of the inquisition are a varied sort - but it's still a surprise to look up and see another set of horns in a primarily human city. One that knows him, and Kaaras recognizes quickly. Beaming, he waves Korrin over. ]

"I'm Cosima." She takes the offered hand, her grip confident but not overbearing. (She's slowly adapting to a clasp rather than a shake in most situations.) "I didn't think I was, but I think it's the first time I've been warm in days. I guess it just got the better of me."

Her smile is sheepish, but she relaxes a little as it's clear Andra isn't put out with her.

"Spice and a day of sunshine?" He asks, feigning shock, "I'd heard you Northerners were greedy, but that's quite the request."

He pauses by what looks to be an old campsite, a singular tattered tent. If it'd belonged to wardens, there was no sign of any of their supplies left behind. He gives up on it and turns his attention back to the elf, scanning the treeline behind him for unwanted visitors.

"You ever been to Orlais? They seem to be one of the only places immune to our Southern rain. Decent food too."
