In the Dragon Age games, as you travel Thedas with your best pals, they have a lot of short conversations about politics, the weather, butts, etc. So this is the Fade Rift equivalent, in four easy steps!

1. Imagine your characters are on a very long walk toward a mission objective, or on a very long walk back after kicking ass, or standing guard together, or gathering herbs, or working in the library late at night, or something. Anything sort of boring that might make people want to have a dumb conversation just to break things up a bit.

OPTIONAL ASSISTANT: Since so many people reported being out of it, we made a random generator to help you come up with some general banter prompts for your top-levels.

2. Post a few remarks your character might say (similar to TFLN, except spoken out loud and less ridiculous and sexy, maybe. maybe not. we don’t know your life) while passing the time.

3. Tag around to reply to those general remarks or to start new/wildcard conversations! Threads should be pretty short and involve minimal action; there’s no need to turn anything into a big production. Multiperson threads are encouraged. Series of conversations between the same two characters occurring on different days are also encouraged.

4. Gather up all of your little conversation snippets like a bouquet and keep them forever, because they’re game canon. Banter threads can't be used for Base AC, but do count towards AC Rewards points.

[ He makes a really gross noise - but then relents and smiles. Yes, fine, he's delighted. ]

So why did you leave her behind?

[ Bastien hums and reclaims Byerly's arm. ]

Perhaps sometime when there is more wine, I can tell you why I left behind my entire life, and you can tell me why you left yours.

[ This is not a remotely fair bargain. ]

[bouchonne]

[ He deliberately chooses the less dire abandonment of his life, responding lightly: ]

You know full well why I'm here, dear Bastien.

[cozen]

You know full well that is not what I mean, [ Bastien says, in a long-suffering sort of sing-song without any edge at all. ] But that is fine. I am sure what I would invent for you is more exciting.

[bouchonne]

No doubt.

[ By's smile is a little crooked. In a rare moment of honesty, he says - ]

It is not a story that will bring you pleasure. So not one you would wish to hear.

[cozen]

[ Bastien grins out of reflex, like By’s said something funny, while he comes precariously close to having his feelings hurt. But he’s very good at recognizing when it’s not about him—which is nearly always—and after a second the grin softens to an affectionate smile. ]

Being your friend ‘brings me pleasure,’ [ very sweetly, ] you pickled monarchist bastard.

[bouchonne]

[ That is actually enough to pull his gaze away from his navel, a little coughed laugh escaping from his throat at the insult. ]

A description that is, regrettably, only two-thirds correct, good peasant.

[ Curious, though. What, an offer to shoulder his emotional burdens? Because of friendship? Odd indeed. ]

[cozen]

I am a terrible peasant— [ first of all ] —and you do not have to tell me anything. I swear not to try to pry you open like a mark—and I swear that I am not swearing that as a way itself to wedge a finger in, and I swear—

[ Et cetera ad infinitum, he conveys with a whirly little hand gesture. ]

But if you ever do want to tell me, I want to hear it. I like knowing you.

[ Which is too sentimental a thing to leave sitting there stewing in its earnestness, so he knocks his shoulder into Byerly’s and adds, ]

We are training Athessa, by the by... By. [ Ha. ] Alexandrie and I. She asked me for advice getting on your good side, so... [ spooky wiggling fingers here ] watch out. And try to make it too easy for her.

[bouchonne]

[ This last part is unexpected enough to pull him out of the faint awkwardness engendered by I like knowing you. (To say nothing of the faint relief at hearing Bastien swear that all of this isn't his Bardly self trying to bend the Ambassador to his will. Even though he knows that a Bard's oath isn't worth much. But he thinks Bastien's oath is. He hopes Bastien's oath is. Sometimes he does worry that all of this is just a very, very long game.) ]

My good side? I don't have a bad side. Does the girl think I dislike her?

[cozen]

[ Maybe life is just a very, very long game, has he considered. ]

She did when we talked about it. Or she thought she had made you angry, at least.

[bouchonne]

Oh.

[ Well. He taps a finger against his thigh, frowning slightly. ]

There was something of that sort, yes. At one point. But it doesn't really matter now.

[cozen]

Good. If you had a permanent feud, being caught between you would destroy me.

[bouchonne]

What - She means that much to you?

[cozen]

[ He twists his arm to elbow Byerly in the side. But not hard. ]

[bouchonne]

Ow. It's a genuine question. I didn't even know you were really friends.

[cozen]

I suppose that is fair.

[ Given he’s friendly to everyone, whether he actually likes them or not, and all of that. ]

We are really friends. She is precious and funny, and she is going to take me to Rivain on a griffon. [ Maybe. ]

[bouchonne]

She really threatened you with that? How dreadful. Do you need me to protect you?

[cozen]

Is there a problem with Rivain?

[ SURELY not a problem with the griffons. ]

[bouchonne]

[ A laugh, and a shake of his head. ]

Maker, you could not pay me to fly on one of those things. You could say to me, The war will end tomorrow if you simply scramble aboard these half-chicken-half-nug monstrosities, and I would say, Let scores more die.

[ Byerly and heights very much do not mix. ]

[cozen]

Monstrosities? They are beautiful.

[bouchonne]

There's a reason they're historically associated with the Gray Wardens. The level of charm is roughly equal for both.

[cozen]

Equal to Garahel, perhaps.

[bouchonne]

Maker, the elf really has gotten to you. How did you come to be so fond of her?

[cozen]

How does anyone become fond of anyone?

[bouchonne]
