Test Drive!

TEST DRIVE MEME

While in some alternate, tidier timeline, the War against the Elder One ended years ago, you're not in that timeline. It's 9:49, and the war continues. An enemy force partially occupies Orlais and has decimated several Marcher Cities, while the Chantry, aided by the Inquisition, has marshaled Orlais and the faithful of Southern Thedas into a new Exalted March against the army of demon-bound Wardens, Red Templars, Venatori loyalists, and darkspawn Corypheus has amassed. Rifts are still scattered across the continent, periodically spitting out strangers from strange worlds with green-glowing anchors embedded in their hands. There's no Herald of Andraste to save Thedas. Someone else is going to have to do it.

You're part of (or allied with, recently hired by, imprisoned by, etc.) an organization, dubbed Riftwatch, that split off from the Inquisition several years ago. Riftwatch consists of these otherworldly new arrivals, rebels and Wardens, and other people who want to prevent the apocalypse without necessarily marching under the Chantry's banner to do it. Their headquarters is an island fortress called the Gallows—formerly a Circle of Magi, more formerly a prison for slaves, but its new occupants have done a good job removing the more grotesque reminders of that past and making the place livable. Their goal is to do what the Chantry can't or won't do, to go more directly after Corypheus and the dark magic he employs, and to keep the Veil from coming apart entirely.

Maybe you're here because you want to help. Maybe you need the money (though there isn't much of it). Maybe you acquired an anchor and sticking around is the only way to prevent your hand from killing you. Maybe you've been sent by the Chantry or some other entity to keep an eye on everyone—they're rumored to be a lot of weirdos and troublemakers. Or maybe you're a new rifter and just going where the nice people with swords tell you that you need to go.

NOTE: This is a static test drive! We post them once per year or so and continue to use them for a long time, so you're never late. Current players are encouraged to track new top-level comments.

I. THE FREE MARCHES: Hasmal, Tantervale, and most recently Starkhaven have all fallen to the Tevinter incursion, leaving Kirkwall the largest city-state in the Free Marches to remain unoccupied. For Riftwatch, that means the war is closer to home than ever, and traveling anywhere north of the mountains runs the risk of running into enemy scouting parties. Perhaps you've been sent out to find these scouts before they find the unwary, or perhaps you're just trying to pass through unnoticed to Antiva or Rivain when you run into trouble. Or maybe you're more in the thick of it: joining the Free Marches armies in harassing the occupying army as best they can from outside the city, or slipping your way into one of them to gather intelligence or meet with an ally.

II. THE WAKING SEA: When Riftwatch isn't traveling by griffon or magic mirror, it frequently travels by sea, courtesy of a small assortment of allied pirate ships. So welcome aboard. The sea is choppy and frequently violent—violent storms, violent enemy ships, or both at once—and the crew may not have much patience for incompetence, so either make yourself useful above or try not to get sick below.

III. KIRKWALL: Even when enormous evil darkspawn are trying to take over the known world and you and your colleagues might be the only ones who can truly stop him, you can't work all the time. And when you aren't working, Kirkwall is there for you with its dingy Lowtown taverns, its flashy Hightown establishments, its market stalls and street musicians and cellars hosting gamblers. (Or maybe you can work all the time, and you're in the city to do some official shopping, try to spy on a suspicious character, or show a potential financial backer a good time.)

IV. SEND A MESSAGE: Each member of Riftwatch is assigned a blue crystal, small enough to wear around the neck, that can transmit voice messages, as well as an enchanted book tied to that crystal that can be used to exchange written messages. They're secure enough to discuss the war, if you'd like to get down to business, but loosely controlled enough to ask a question or play a game with only a few rolled eyes from people who hate fun.

V. WILDCARD: From the Gallows' library to the pirate islands off the coast, from Hightown's high-priced market stalls to the bloody frontlines of the war, Thedas is yours to explore.

Loki is tall, and pretty distracted in the moment, and probably sleep-deprived? At least he has been for the last û̶͙͔̹̹͝ͅͅǹ̸̝͔͙̃c̴̡̛̰͈͇̻͎̦̑͋́͂͐͋̿͝ô̶̢͕̩̟͖̱͓̣̝u̸̢̧̡̪̱͔͎̇̿ǹ̷͙̫̥̩̺̤̻̙͑̾͐̈́̋͝t̸͇̟̖͗́̏̐̑͘a̴̪̗̬̯͊̐̕̕b̵̨̥̮̖̰̫͎̜͐͊̃͆́̄̿̓̀ͅl̶̙͎͊̃ę̸̧͇͖̮̫̱͈͕͑̚ amount of time, certainly. And Abby is strong. She's fast. Loki isn't expecting someone to walk up and hit him.

All this to say? The punch lands. Loki's books? Suddenly on the floor. His pride? Brusied. Injured. Wherever she hit him? Also bruised. Possibly injured.

He startles on the impact, a loud yelp in the otherwise quiet library that is immediately angrily shushed by another patron elsewhere.

Somewhere between rubbing at this new sore spot, a mournful glance at the books askew at his feet, and glaring at whomever just shushed him, it occurs to Loki what just happened.

Abby hit him.

So of course he pulls her into a hug, picks her up, and spins her around. Totally logical and sane response, right? Right.

I'M NOT AT ALL

Old habits die hard (punching when she's taken by surprise, not hitting old friends, people she hasn't seen in... a year? Probably more). She's shocked, mouth slightly open as Loki reels and drops all his books on the ground. They earn a hearty, scorned hushing for their combined efforts.

"Shit," she says, soft. He hugs her.

Even seeing him again and saying hello would have been enough but he clearly remembers her. Abby forgot his strength until he lifts her, effortlessly. She laughs, stunned, in his ear, and wraps her arms around him tight. She says, "You're actually here. When—"

But, again, shushing rings out. Somebody an aisle over is clearly desperate for silence to be maintained. They should probably get out before they continue the conversation. Abby makes herself let him go and hastens to help collect the books.

GOOD because it was wonderful

Alright, alright. Letting go, the first order of business; its difficult though. Think he was touch starved before, boy howdy. Helping Abby gather up his books, checking them out, while occasionally bumping her hip with his own. The reminder that she's real, solid, there. Then, Loki, books, Abby, all into the hall outside of the library.

"I just got here a few days ago, I honestly... I've been having sleep trouble so I hadn't gotten around to seeing who all I knew was here, but. Hi, Abby. Wow." He chuckles, runs a hand through his hair before rebalancing his hold on the books. "How are you? Tell me... everything worth knowing."
armd: (but you said :()

[personal profile] armd 2023-11-15 10:28 am (UTC)(link)
Taking half the stack of books from his arms is helping out but also an excuse to bump into him with her hands and confirm that, yes, he is actually still here. He did the same to her in the library so she doesn't bother to be more stealthy about it. Been a long time since they've been around each other and thinking the same things.

"What's 'sleep trouble'?" Can't be a fancy way of saying nightmares. Who cares how Abby is; what's been keeping Loki from walking around the Gallows unimpeded and finding her before now? Sounds far more pressing. "Are you okay?"
icasm: (the place where you belong)

[personal profile] icasm 2023-11-15 05:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Loki smiles at the hand touching confirmation of existence and then immediately shakes his head in an attempt to dismiss the idea that he's not okay or that Abby needs to be actively worried about him.

"Mostly I am... just very tired but it comes out in unexpected times. It's difficult to wake me and I fall asleep in crowded or uncommon spaces. Things like that." Plus, yes, nightmares with a dash of sleepwalking for good measure.

Ya boi is exhausted, Abby, and has been for countless days. Now he's in a body that won't put up with untold years of sleep debt.
armd: (sideways)

[personal profile] armd 2023-11-16 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm. Doesn't seem so 'okay' to her. God, caring for Loki's well-being is like second nature to Abby. She slips back into it like she would an old, warm coat.

"Why are you so tired though? Do you know?" She's looking at his face, his eyes, when he says it and then she notices, how truly exhausted he seems. Maybe questioning him like this in a corridor isn't the best plan.

She jerks her head, to indicate that they should walk. They can go find a place to sit.

Once upon a time Loki would have been much too proud to take Abby's style of care with anything approaching grace. Things have changed. And he is, truly, incredibly exhausted.

"I do know why," he tells her, and they're off, only much more slowly than racehorses. Loki shoves his hands in his pockets in such a familiar way, combined with that slight slump in his shoulders, that might telegraph to her that he's not looking forward to the whole truth of the matter coming out... but also he's not planning on outright lying about it, either. "As per usual, it is primarily the consequences of my own actions."
armd: (that's why i'm right)

[personal profile] armd 2023-11-21 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh my god," she says, expression blank. "Really. I'm shocked." Who could have seen this coming?

Even still, she leads him deeper into the stone and brick, because it is getting cold outside, toward the dining hall where it's likely they'll be able to shake somebody down for a hot drink if they need one. There are benches to sit on. Abby finds one close to the fire for them.

"What action was this the consequence of, exactly?"
icasm: (blood on a marble wall)

[personal profile] icasm 2023-11-28 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
"Yes, yes, I know." Part of him feels... ugh, it's so complicated. On the one hand, he desperately wants to see Sylvie again. To invite her to enchant him and see the truth of it all for herself, because he knows now that he handled it poorly in the end.

He explained nothing.

And there are reasons for that, definitely, but a great many of them simply boil down to I was exhausted and outplayed and had run out of viable options over the course of centuries -- none of which is anything Sylvie, B, OB, Mobius, Casey or HWR's variant knew anything about at the time.

"I ensured that everyone had a choice. Free will. But the cost was very high."
armd: (you don't know me)

[personal profile] armd 2023-12-11 10:55 am (UTC)(link)
She watches his face, searching for something more, but he's quite closed off. Obviously they wouldn't slip back into their usual rapport so quickly, Abby's only just found him again, but she still feels a little frustrated with not being able to read his expression properly.

"What was the cost? Do you want to talk about it?"

Maybe he doesn't. He did ask about her initially but she steered the conversation away.
