Test Drive!

TEST DRIVE MEME

While in some alternate, tidier timeline, the War against the Elder One ended years ago, you're not in that timeline. It's 9:49, and the war continues. An enemy force partially occupies Orlais and has decimated several Marcher Cities, while the Chantry, aided by the Inquisition, has marshaled Orlais and the faithful of Southern Thedas into a new Exalted March against the army of demon-bound Wardens, Red Templars, Venatori loyalists, and darkspawn Corypheus has amassed. Rifts are still scattered across the continent, periodically spitting out strangers from strange worlds with green-glowing anchors embedded in their hands. There's no Herald of Andraste to save Thedas. Someone else is going to have to do it.

You're part of (or allied with, recently hired by, imprisoned by, etc.) an organization, dubbed Riftwatch, that split off from the Inquisition several years ago. Riftwatch consists of these otherworldly new arrivals, rebels and Wardens, and other people who want to prevent the apocalypse without necessarily marching under the Chantry's banner to do it. Their headquarters is an island fortress called the Gallows—formerly a Circle of Magi, more formerly a prison for slaves, but its new occupants have done a good job removing the more grotesque reminders of that past and making the place livable. Their goal is to do what the Chantry can't or won't do, to go more directly after Corypheus and the dark magic he employs, and to keep the Veil from coming apart entirely.

Maybe you're here because you want to help. Maybe you need the money (though there isn't much of it). Maybe you acquired an anchor and sticking around is the only way to prevent your hand from killing you. Maybe you've been sent by the Chantry or some other entity to keep an eye on everyone—they're rumored to be a lot of weirdos and troublemakers. Or maybe you're a new rifter and just going where the nice people with swords tell you that you need to go.

NOTE: This is a static test drive! We post them once per year or so and continue to use them for a long time, so you're never late. Current players are encouraged to track new top-level comments.

I. THE FREE MARCHES: Hasmal, Tantervale, and most recently Starkhaven have all fallen to the Tevinter incursion, leaving Kirkwall the largest city-state in the Free Marches to remain unoccupied. For Riftwatch, that means the war is closer to home than ever, and traveling anywhere north of the mountains runs the risk of running into enemy scouting parties. Perhaps you've been sent out to find these scouts before they find the unwary, or perhaps you're just trying to pass through unnoticed to Antiva or Rivain when you run into trouble. Or maybe you're more in the thick of it: joining the Free Marches armies in harassing the occupying army as best they can from outside the city, or slipping your way into one of them to gather intelligence or meet with an ally.

II. THE WAKING SEA: When Riftwatch isn't traveling by griffon or magic mirror, it frequently travels by sea, courtesy of a small assortment of allied pirate ships. So welcome aboard. The sea is choppy and frequently violent—violent storms, violent enemy ships, or both at once—and the crew may not have much patience for incompetence, so either make yourself useful above or try not to get sick below.

III. KIRKWALL: Even when enormous evil darkspawn are trying to take over the known world and you and your colleagues might be the only ones who can truly stop him, you can't work all the time. And when you aren't working, Kirkwall is there for you with its dingy Lowtown taverns, its flashy Hightown establishments, its market stalls and street musicians and cellars hosting gamblers. (Or maybe you can work all the time, and you're in the city to do some official shopping, try to spy on a suspicious character, or show a potential financial backer a good time.)

IV. SEND A MESSAGE: Each member of Riftwatch is assigned a blue crystal, small enough to wear around the neck, that can transmit voice messages, as well as an enchanted book tied to that crystal that can be used to exchange written messages. They're secure enough to discuss the war, if you'd like to get down to business, but loosely controlled enough to ask a question or play a game with only a few rolled eyes from people who hate fun.

V. WILDCARD: From the Gallows' library to the pirate islands off the coast, from Hightown's high-priced market stalls to the bloody frontlines of the war, Thedas is yours to explore.

I’d rather trust a raven than a magical speaking crystal.

I suppose mysterious and sexy is the appropriate theme for a secret society of bards. It’s in their job description at least.

It’s off the square and the merchant wears a gold mask. I’m certain I can get you a discount.

I dunno, a raven can be shot down, a cat can eat it, a bigger and meaner bird can fuck with it, loads of possibilities for problems.

Exactly! A slinky dress or a low cut top, tight trousers, knee high boots...with the exception of the dress you can armor up using the other stuff easy and still stay nice and distracting!

Thanks, that would be great. I'm not made of coin and I'm trying to get the job done and get a little or a lot of money to go back to the Biggest Boyfriend. Now turned fiancé!

I doubt griffons would bother a raven.

Forgot being distracting is also in a bard’s job description. You’re very good at it.

We could always use distractions out in the field. I could teach you some spycraft. Loads more money there than singing in a tavern.
talkstoomuch: ((let me go))

[personal profile] talkstoomuch 2024-10-28 03:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Probably not. I bet they hang out when not on duty.

I appreciate you saying so. I do try, but it's the kind of thing which has to seem effortless.

Oooh, that sounds tempting! More than tempting, actually, but a girl's gotta play coy now and then. I will take you up on your offer!

That's something I'd watch on my time off.

Trust me, from someone who is not effortless in being distracting, you've got a gift.

Right, meet me first thing in the morning in Darktown and I'll teach you how to lose a tail.

Me too. It would be cute! We could charge for people to watch and make a fortune, too!

Thanks! I didn't start out as a wandering bard, I started at the university of all places, but met someone else who was doing it and thought I should give it a shot.

A very useful skill, no matter if it involves losing a weird guy or someone who wants your information. See you then!

[the next morning, Ari arrives in another low-cut shirt, tight trousers, knee high boots, and a short scarf tied around her neck, her brown hair loose. despite that, she manages to look like she's not loitering]

[River doesn't respond to the last few messages that come through the crystal and focuses on donning his best tradecraft for the next morning. He looks like a common merchant, someone with a face and clothes that blend in with the crowd. Standing in the background for a moment or two as he watches her, River wonders if she'll spot him simply because they know each other half decently or because he's outright watching her.]

[Ari's always had a feeling for when someone's watching her. she'd say it's because of her years as a performer, but it's really because her grandmother looked at her as little as possible, annoyed at having to raise her daughter's child by who knew which man for how long as her daughter roamed Thedas, following a moderately successful singing troupe from place to place.

every now and then, the troupe would come to Denerim and Ari thought this time her mother would stay, but she never did.

so Ari packed up and started wandering herself as soon as she was old enough.

she follows the feel of the gaze to a man dressed like a common enough merchant and approaches, eyebrow arched in curiosity]

My teacher, I presume?

[The O.B. raised River on takes of spycraft in the Fifth Blight and River, himself, went into the practice as well. As it turns out, his father also practiced the craft, albeit in a much more disruptive manner. He'd been training to serve the Inquisition when he flubbed at a critical step and landed in Riftwatch instead.

When he's seen, River makes his way out of the shadows and greets her with a nod.

River Cartwright.

[sometimes, Ari hopes she runs into her mother on the road. most of the time, she doesn't. she's stopped being actively angry at her mother, but it's like one of those wounds where you have to not touch it because if you do, it'll flare up again and ruin (years) weeks of progress.

Ari smiles impishly at the acknowledgement]

Ari Sloane. Nice outfit. So, what's the first lesson? Other than 'be inconspicuous.'
trainingexercise: (u)

sorry for the delay!

[personal profile] trainingexercise 2024-11-11 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Be inconspicuous is the start of it. No tight leather or gems. You want to look like everyone else.

[Which he does right now. However, if they were to go to Orlais, he'd need a different outfit entirely.]

But each country has its own 'normal.' Orlais would require wearing a mask, Antiva a different accent.
talkstoomuch: (ladies in the back let me hear you say)

no worries, it's been a rough week

[personal profile] talkstoomuch 2024-11-12 04:10 pm (UTC)(link)
No tight leather, there goes half my wardrobe. But I don't wear any gems, I'm always too scared they'd get lost on the road.

[Ari was far too used to having to stand out at least a little. she was always too afraid she'd be overlooked if she didn't. if there was one thing Ari hated, it was being dismissed and disregarded. but, seemed like she might have to get used to it, at least a little]

--accents! I've got a knack for those, I'm not originally from Denerim and I taught myself the accent.
trainingexercise: (j)

[personal profile] trainingexercise 2024-11-12 07:27 pm (UTC)(link)
[River assumed she'd have to avoid half of her wardrobe if she wanted to do spy work.] The point is to not be noticed, Ari.

[However, the mention of accents is good.] Accents can get you almost anywhere. You can explain away bad dress, incorrect customs, anything with a good accent.
talkstoomuch: (a lot of things that I don't mean)

[personal profile] talkstoomuch 2024-11-13 06:37 pm (UTC)(link)
[it seemed the likeliest option. she thought the tutors her ex had employed had done a better job of teaching her what to do, but Cass had always loved standing out in a crowd, something that initially drew Ari to her.

Josh couldn't hide in a crowd. he was ridiculously tall and broad with a too-distinctive face. she hid in his shadow most of the time.

but now she'd have to be her own shadow]

I know. You're right, I know you're right. [she sighed and grinned wryly] How to disappear...will need more coin.

[she nodded and said quietly] My ex-wife...her friends started to like me better after I taught myself Orlesian and the right accent to use it with. The masks were a pain in the arse, though.
